Question on Scholarships

If you have the required ACT score for scholarships but your school doesn’t rank can you still get it?

Yes. Our school doesn’t rank but my son got the National Buckeye and the Maximus. And even though our school doesn’t rank, I think it would be pretty obvious by his GPA that he would not have been in the top 3% required for the Maximus. So I don’t think Admissions even tries to approximate a rank for applicants who come from a high school that doesn’t rank.

Would you mind sharing her GPA?

Thank you everybody for your responses!

@indianguy1 - you definitely can get scholarships even if your high school doesn’t rank. Many high schools don’t rank anymore. My D’s high school does not provide class rank, and she got received the Maximus and National Buckeye Scholarships a few weeks ago. In a CC post last year, a parent spoke to admissions and found that OSU “used some formula” to determine his/her son’s class rank. I believe counselors provide universities with a high school profile as part of the Common App. Our high school profile includes the GPA for the top 10%, top 25% and top 50% from last year’s graduating class. I don’t know if every high school’s profile contains that information. I think the Common App also asks counselors to provide the highest GPA in the class. Thus, universities still might have enough information so that college admissions can make an educated guess about your class rank at your high school.

I do not believe that OSU uses a formula to determine their version of a studen’ts rank if one is not provided. My son was awarded the Maximus scholarship and I can’t believe there is any formula in the world that would suggest he is in the top 3% of his class. I believe when no rank is provided they go solely on the ACT/SAT score.

Is there a separate application for Maximus scholarship? Thanks

No, I believe you are automatically considered. @Greyson30

You are considered if you apply by the 11/1 deadline.

@Pras2016 I’m surprised your son didn’t get the Maximus as his ACT definitely qualifies. My son got it with an SAT of 1450 and our school also doesn’t rank, but your son actually has higher UW and W GPAs and more AP classes and more ECs.

Received Provost + National Buckeye notice today in regular mail - less than a month after the admit decision. ACT 33. GPA 3.5 unweighted, 3.9 weighted. High school does not rank. Have not heard about Honors program yet.

GPA Correction: GPA WTD 4.36 UW 3.94 school doesn’t rank (I assume they consider Unweighted GPA for Scholarship)

In State/OOS : In State

I agree, son has about the same stats as well and received Maximus, however we do rank 10/240 and 10 AP’s all 4’s and 5’s so far.

Received Trustees & National Buckeye today. 32 ACT, 4.88 W GPA, 103/573 ranking.
