On both of our visits to the University of Rochester, we've heard that undergraduate research opportunities exist. My son is planning on majoring in biology, maybe pre-med, but more likely medical research. I'd like to hear from any current (or past) students in the biology or chemistry. Did you have research opportunities freshman year? sophomore year? If so, were you mainly the gopher (I fully understand that the methods need to be learned before a student can take a lead role in research)? Is it really competitive to get involved or mainly a matter of a student approaching the faculty doing research that is of interest?

On the opposite side, my son is also interested in creative writing. Any thoughts on the creative writing courses and/or faculty?

Thanks in advance.
