One of my kids is going to be graduating from pharmacy school this year, and is being encouraged to think about continuing into med school (GF's Dad has pharmacy and med degrees; a precepter; a military recruiter). He heard from a pharmaceutical rep that at least one med school has a 3-year med school program for pharmacists. This is news to me. Has anyone ever heard of this program?

The rep is mistaken. There is no accelerate PharmD–>MD program anywhere.

Med school takes 4 years no matter what degree one comes in with. (Then add another 3-7 years for a mandatory residency. And another 1-3 year after residency for optional specialty fellowships.)

I think physicians with pharmacy degrees used to be common back before pharmacy required a doctoral degree to get licensed.

Thank you very much for the info.

I would say that unless your kid REALLY REALLY REALLY wants to be a physician it would just be a huge waste of time/effort/money at this point to pursue med school. Go enjoy the much cushier life style of a licensed pharmacist than a doctor in training.

One my D’s best med school friends is a PharmD… And now she is MD/PhD. She’s very happy with her choices.
