Question re: NMSF

My D found out today that she qualified as a NMSF. She has taken the ACT and is NOT planning to take the SAT (did well on the ACT, is afraid to "chance" the SAT, doesn't want the hassle). Does this mean she automatically can not apply to be a NMF?

According to the NM website, one of the requirements for progression from semi-finalist to finalist is that you must "confirm" your PSAT performance with an SAT score:

"Take the current SAT Reasoning TestTM OR have taken the old SAT and old SAT Subject Test in Writing and earn scores that confirm your 2004 PSAT/NMSQT performance. It is your responsibility to file
a request with the College Board SAT Program to have an official report of your SAT scores sent to NMSC."

I take that to mean that if she doesn't submit an SAT score at all, she will not go on to the finalist stage. She shouldn't worry about the SAT scores required to "confirm" her PSAT performance. My recollection was that it didn't need to be astronomically high at all.

Have her take the SAT. Most smf make it to finalist status, baring C's and D's on the transcript or refusal of the principal to recommend the student.... Even schools that don't give official NM scholarships will sometimes offer good deals to attract NMF's. (Not Yale, Harvard, etc...) but others.

Congrats to your D on finding out her NMSF status!!!!!!!!!! That's really awesome! I'd have her take the SAT if only for the sake of its being a requirement for finalist status. She can still choose to submit only the ACT to colleges if she wishes to, but in order to minimize a possible hassle with her school over this, have her NOT send the scores to the school before she views them. ~berurah

One point to note if she takes the SAT I for NMF qualification but does not intend to submit the scores to colleges: some colleges will require SAT II scores, even for students who submit ACT instead of SAT I. If so, the schools will receive a complete report when they get the SAT II scores, including any SAT I sittings. FYI.

And good job on being named NMSF!!

Yes, she must take the SAT if she wants to progress to finalist.
I think the minimum confirming score is pretty low--maybe around 1800/1900? Does anyone know? If she did that well on the PSAT, she shouldn't have any trouble with the SAT.

My son submitted the ACT whenever possible in lieu of the SAT I and II's. Out of the 11 schools to which my son applied, the only one that asked for the SAT II's was Cornell, I believe. ~b.

Several schools on the West Coast (especially UCs) require SAT IIs. Congrats on your daughter's qualifying. I agree with the posts above about NMF. Also, if she's going to sit for the Oct testing, she needs to register soon if she's going to be able to test & will already need to pay a late fee (needed to register by 9/7 to avoid late fee).
Good luck to her! ANY Cs will make candidate not advance to NMF according to friend whose son had that misfortune last year.

Congratulations to your daughter on her achievement!

She'll will have to take the SAT I to advance. Do any of the colleges to which she wants to apply require SAT IIs? Has she taken them yet? If the answer to both is, "Yes," she can order the score reports before she takes the SAT I. If she hasn't yet made up her mind about colleges, she has until at least the November SAT testing date to implement this strategy.

If none of the colleges on her list require SAT IIs, there's no need to worry. SAT won't send the score reports to colleges unless she asks that they be sent.

According to the NMSF information the remaining SAT test dates which will be accepted by NMSF are:
October 8
November 5
December 3

When D#1 was NMSF we were advised by GC that SAT was needed to more or less validate the PSAT score. My impression was that the two scores needed to be within a reasonable range, but I might be wrong.

Thank you all. One parent suggested that she complete her SAT IIs early fall (she plans to take the first available day in October) and then go ahead and send her scores to all the colleges on her possible list. Then she can take the December SAT cold and not have to send the scores if she doesn't want to. She's thinking about it. She has a play that weekend (Taming of the Shrew) so is concerned about the overload, but we'll see.

Congrats to your D! Check her colleges of interest - some offer a merit scholarship for NMF - and some employers do also. Could be a few grand for a morning's work in December - not bad pay!

One more tip--unless she's POSITIVE on which college she wants to attend & has already been accepted, it's best to choose undecided & then when she's POSITIVE, inform the college board of her choice. Folks who have been offered a NM scholarship from the school they choose on their NMF app can lose the scholarship if they change school. The College Board & GC can give more info. Most colleges will give students until Apr/May to decide & get their NMF scholarship.
