Question re: R&C, "College Writing" and Medical School

Hi everyone,

Quick question here. I'm considering throwing in the pre-med requisite courses for admission to med school and I see that many med schools require that students have at least one year of college English or writing. But I'm wondering, would basically any lit/writing course satisfy this (even, for instance, Slavic R5A-B?) or must it be English R1A-B or College Writing or Rhetoric?

Also, i'm in CoE, and i've already passed out of the first half of the R&C requirement through an AP exam. As a result I'll probably take just the second half of that req. for English.. (i.e., the R1B, not the R1A & B) (and I'll probably hold off till spring semester for that because I'm interested in another humanities course for fall). But if I decide to continue with pre-med requisite courses, could I take the second semester of writing as a course that is not in that series? Or must I start off with R#A and then move on to R#B in order to satisfy the "1 year of English" (two semesters(?)) requirement for med schools?

I apologize if that was a bit confusing, but I would very much appreciate any help I could get on this matter :) Thanks, and GO BEARS!!

I don't think you need the same series for med school, you just need to have the A and the B half and you can mix and match them. They are very flexible about these things and the career center advises that you keep your syllabus in case med schools want to review them to see whether they fit the reading and composition requirements.

so do I have to have an A and a B? or can I just take the B for one class and some other English/lit/writing course later that isn't part of an A/B series?

You should ask your admissions officer instead!
