son (current junior)just found out his school nominated him for an award at a specific university and he just received the certificate and medal. if he chooses to go to that university it also carries merit money. do you put the award on a resume (maybe not list the school..just the name of the award) or do you leave it off as it is school specific.

List everything that shows his abilities. I’d leave off the school too, but elaborate in an interview if asked.

If this is one of the University of Rochester awards, I think it should be listed on the common application/resume. They are well-known awards and only given out to one student per school. I would say this for any university sponsored award.
Edit: I disagree with the poster above. Your child didn’t solicit the award from a particular university. His high school nominated him. No problem with naming the university.

momof3sons (btw i am a mom of 3 sons too) it is a u rochester one. He didnt even know he had been nominated, just called and told me. Rochester wasnt even on his list, but i have been over on their website since LOL! we are doing 2 college visits next week, and he is meeting with some directors of different programs and wanted to take a resume in case they ask for one so …list it with the name and say from Univ Rochester?

parent56,
The reason I guessed U of R is that one of my sons received the Bausch & Lomb science award from U of R this week. When you say that he is meeting with directors of programs, are these college interviews? The Rochester awards have very specific names, the Bausch & Lomb, the George Eastman, etc. I don’t see the harm in mentioning U of R. As I said previously, he didn’t apply to Rochester seeking the award. It found him. :)

yep that’s the same one!! Congratulations to both our sons!!! we actually scheduled tours but then he emailed the honors colleges and the scholars programs at the 2 schools and they emailed back with a time to meet with them…he thought he would just get an assistant but the directors set up the meeting. so its not a formal interview for scholarship but as the scholars programs are really selective, it may let him at least make a first impression. (hopefully good!! at indiana and at ut dallas)

parent56,
congratulations to your son and I absolutely think it will be no problem to mention U of R. As far as I know, they are the only ones who give this particular award, and I would imagine that many colleges have heard of it.

hmmm how weird, u of r has good/great rankings in things, but not in princeton review book of top 366 colleges.

^^ I’ve never be able to understand that.

My older son (now graduating from law school) also got the B&L award from UofR and ended up going there. It did come with some merit money, but after 4 years, I was broke! Great school, though.

i have found it on a list of the top 100 universities, has strong academics, nationally recognized programs, both undergrad and grad level. i found one saying it was a best value (which i would beg to differ at over 52K)…ie unless they give alot of merit, will be out of our league…but definitely one you would expect to see in the princeton book imo. any one know about the school?

lol digmedia, i agree that award wouldnt be near enough to cover it. but glad to hear he and you thought it was great school

D also received the Bausch and Lomb Award with merit money offer from University of Rochester when she graduated two years ago. She didn’t attend the school but one of her classmates did. Always thought is was too bad they didn’t give him the award and $$$.

wouldn’t that be nice! if our child gets one he/she doesnt use…could trade it with someone who would and they could use theirs…

Very bizarre that U of R isn’t in the Princeton Review book. I wonder if they don’t “cooperate” in some manner. They are listed on the (in)famous US News rankings at #35 for national universities. This puts them in the same group as Georgia Tech, Lehigh and Wisconsin-Madison.

Just checked DS’s resumes after senior year of HS - he got the Xerox Award from UR (for Innovation & Information Technology) but we didn’t include it. I can’t exactly remember why not - probably because he had several other honors (including Fermilab) that seemed more earned than awarded, I guess, especially since it effectively was awarded by his high school. But it’s still sitting on his shelf looking impressive!

i’ve been thinking about these interviews and am feeling nervous! as said, he thought he would meet with an admin/assist type person for these programs, not the coordinator and directors… anyone ever done this pre-admission type interview?

will it be more about him ie tell us about yourself or will it be more program directed ie what could you bring to this program, why this program, what do you like about this program? One said if he was with family, that the family member could sit in on the discussion too…good idea? or let him do it alone?
If they go well, it could only help his application but if bad…
