Like most everyone here, I have taken quite a few courses at the community colleges in my area during high school and summertime to accumulate units and hopefully fulfill some GE requirements so I can graduate on time. I know about the cap on community college units after 105 quarter units are accumulated, but I am more concerned about the actual courses and how they are viewed by the university. What I have read is that most of the GE courses at UCLA are 5 quarter units, with the exception being the science courses, and anything that is not 5 units doesn't seem to yield any GE credit. All the courses I have taken at community college have been 3 semester units, or 4.5 quarter units, however. The community colleges have articulation agreements with UCLA specifically stating that my courses will be accepted in a particular GE subgroup, but it is not clear to me if they will be counted as a full class or only as a fraction of one (or here as 90% of one).

So, is it safe to assume that I will get the same course and GE credit for, let's say, "Sociology 1" at the community college as I would at UCLA, where the course is labeled the same and has essentially the same description and textbook? They won't let me take that course equivalent at UCLA after all. If it isn't, could I do an independent research project or earn credit by exam to make them equal enough for UCLA? Or will I have to take double courses? Or maybe one-tenth of a GE course (is there even such a thing)? Could someone transfer just half a unit from the ridiculous number of AP units I have over to the GE category (:p)? Could I petition? Can someone that has some experience with this weigh-in?
