Is it common for a student to have a business major and then take the core curriculum for the preprofessional studies (to get into med school)? Thanks for your responses!

It isn't the most common pair that I have seen but I don't think you will be the only one doing it. You have a lot of flexibility at ND, it really is one of ND's greatest assets. If you are unsure of what way to go, I don't think it is bad. You may not get as much of a background in science as you would being a bio major, but you will get what you need IMO and still will have the business background should you decide to go that route. It is always good to have options. I was pretty sure that I wanted to do Psychology but I also wanted to be employable upon graduation, so I picked up Computer Applications which has a starting salary out of ND of around 50k. It made applying to graduate school a lot less stressful knowing that I had options.

Of course that doesn't mean you shouldn't be Theo/pre-prof or any other combo, it is completely up to you. Just start out with an open mind and follow what you find interesting.
