Question regarding freshman "Signature Courses"

Will be in Austin the beginning of next week with my son for orientation/registration. Does anyone out there have any thoughts regarding the freshman Signature Courses offered? It is my understanding that they are there to try to give freshmen exposure to some great lecturers and/or the chance to participate in a smaller class. Wondering if anyone out there could recommend any particular classes or teachers or warn away from others. Thanks!

UGS courses are difficult to get into regardless if they are UGS 302 (small group/Signature) or UGS 303 (larger class). I would suggest your son join a FIG that contains a UGS class. That’s what my daughter did last year. She took a UGS 303 class as part of her FIG as well as Sociology, I think. As an incoming freshman, your son is competing for spots in a UGS class not only with other freshmen, but transfer students as well. So, spots are limited.

He should take “The Modern Family” with Loving. Its very easy to earn an A and he’ll get to learn about the inner workings and relationships within a “functional” fam  Not to mention its fun!

Anything Jerome Bump teaches, who is a Plan II professor that teaches a freshman signature course most semesters, would be an amazing experience. He was teacher of the year for Plan II this year and there is a reason for that.
