i am interested in going to nyu and have been hearing alot about the gsp program. i am thinking of majoring in either finance or economics. finance obviously being at stern and econ at the cas. iknow stern is considered slightly harder to get into than cas. my question is, would i have a better chance at applying for cas since im undecided? also, if i were to not get into cas or stern but receive an invitation to the GSP, would i have a better chance at getting into GSP if i apply to cas rather than stern?

i really, really want to go to nyu, lol, so please any help would be much appreciated.

Interpol33 - Stern is extremely difficult to get into, and from what I gather not just "slightly harder" to get into than CAS, people have posted something like below 10%, compared to the University wide 27%.

Not knowing your GPA, SAT scores and student profile, it is impossible to answer your question, but I wanted to make sure you knew how tough making it into Stern really was.

Stern students can't get placed into the GSP program (btw it has been renamed the Liberal Studies Program). So if you apply for Stern, you will get accepted/rejected/or maybe waitlisted (not sure if Stern has a waitlist).

If you apply CAS, you can get accepted/rejected/waitlisted, or placed into LSP. So the answer to your question is that yes, your chances of LSP are higher with CAS, because Stern doesn't have LSP.

However, if you apply to CAS, get into LSP, DO NOT say that after 2 years you want to go to Stern and not CAS. So many students try that, and with Stern, I think it's not allowed. Someone asked this question today in an info session with a professor, and he got shot down.

thanks for answering that, i will probably apply to CAS then because i really want to go to nyu. right now my stats are:

gpa: 3.4
act: 28 (took once with no preparation)
sat: taking in october

editor for school yearbook
deca (marketing team) member, one of top 5 teams in country
job for two years working ~20 hrs weekly
internship with obama campagain.

also, i am going to have a tutor to help with my standardized test scores. If i can raise my ACT to the 30-31 range and get an equivelant score on the SAT, do I have a shot at CAS or LS (which i would definitely choose if offered) ? I will be applying Early Action.

I think you have a decent shot - it's Early Decision by the way (binding contract) not EA. To give you an idea, I had a 3.64UW, 2140 SAT, 8 APs, and I was placed into LS. It seems to me that LS students are overall good with one major weakness - for me it was math, I had terrible grades (C my junior year in pre-calc).

Also, LS students are often undeclared and contemplating several majors - if you indicate that on your app, you will most likely get into LS, which will give you time to fully decide what you want, and also smaller classes with more one on one time with professors.

This is how I see LSP. NYU adcoms can tell that you are smart, but you have a glaring weakness (extremely awesome GPA+ low test grades or vice versa). Instead of downright rejecting you, NYU will take the risk and throw you into LSP so you could better yourself (and become "ripe" and "matured).

So basically, if you get LS'd, it means NYU recognizes you have the potential to become a great student. I'd be thrilled if I get LS'd because I have a decent GPA (but less than stellar compared to the smartiepants these days) and extremely high standardized test scores.
