question regarding inter-UC transfer to Berkeley

The UCOP and UC Berkeley Admissions website provides a fairly 'fuzzy' description on what is necessary to transfer to UC Berkeley.

From what I can understand, one must first complete a minimum of 60 UC Transferable semester units before applying to Berkeley as a transfer. HOWEVER, the transfer application is not posted until October.

This becomes an issue:

At UCs that operate on quarter systems, it would take an individual approximately two years to achieve the equivalent of 60 semester units. Thus, this requirement would be met at the completion of the student's sophomore year. However, the transfer application is not posted until October. Does this mean the applicant must apply in the middle of his/her junior year (he couldn't before, since he had not yet received enough credits)?

Furthermore, transfers are only considered for the FALL semester (according to UC Berkeley's transfer brochure). Does this mean, then, that the applicant, if admitted, would only attend UC Berkeley for one year-- their senior year?

Surely I am tremendously misunderstanding something here. Would someone kindly clarify? Thanks!

You apply during your 2nd year. You basically list what classes you plan on taking before you would enter Cal that would show that you meet the 60-unit min before your 3rd Fall semester.

Let me preface this by saying I don't know much about the transfer process.

I know a girl who I THINK spent only 1 year at UCSD, and I know a guy who I'm sure did the same. The girl then went to Berkeley, the guy UCR. I think both had a huge amount of AP/CC/etc credit and took heavy loads, but I'm not positive this is true for both of them. The guy transferred 5 or so years ago, and the girl very recently.

Jhg888,

The only hard and fast rule is 60 semester units. That's 90 quarter units.

Try to complete as many of the IGETC requirements and assist.org major requirements as you can, and the rest is all just GPA.
