hello, I am soon going to bu as a freshman and i had quick question.
i have quite a bit of luggage to bring with me (from california) and i was wondering if i can store a portion of them during the orientation somewhere… (hopefully somewhere cheap and safe)

also i have a lot of clothes, (like jackets for the winter) would it be necessary to bring a large number of clothes?..would an average dorm room have enough closet space?

well good luck to you all and ill be counting on all your responses!

Are you going to the last orientation session? If so, I believe you get to move into your dorm room. So that's where youd be putting them. If you aren't going to the last one, why are you bringing so much stuff to orientation?

lostand found- you are misreading the question. bloodyose has too m uch luggage for their one trip, so if he brings out a lot at orientation and stores it, then they ca bring the rest of the luggage over.

ooo. Well there are self storage spaces that will be able to store them for you for a little bit. Others can probably have specific company suggestions as I've never had to use them.

As for clothes, most freshmen (at least that I've seen) find they bring too much stuff with them when they first move in, especially with clothes. I'd say just don't bring EVERYTHING you own. I think the most important thing is to have enough socks and underwear. I often didn't feel like/have time to do laundry for two or three weeks. And don't worry, the first semester is kind of an experiment for a lot of people in what they need. Even if you find yourself with extra stuff or lacking something, first semester will be over in a flash and you can remedy the situation.

OK...I'm just a parent....but of the OP has too much "stuff" for one trip, the OP has too much "stuff" to fit into a BU freshman dorm room. The closets are very small, the dressers aren't exactly roomy, and there isn't any "extra space" in the rooms for extra storage vessels of any kind. My son (recent BU grad...and yes, I understand he's a boy with different "must have" items than some girls) says...put all of your stuff in one room in your house. Then only take half of that with you to BU. Even with that, you will only use a small portion of what you think you need to take. Related, DD goes to school in CA. She moved there with three suitcases of "stuff" (I flew out with her so we had an "extra bag"). She flew home this summer with only two suitcases and plans to leave most of the contents of those suitcases here...they were not items she needed.

P.S. just remember that in addition to finding places to put your "stuff", you will also have to find a place for all that luggage IN your dorm room. BU does not have storage rooms in the dorms...all student belongings are stored IN the student's room.

I recommend collapsible rolling duffle bags that can stash under your bed.

Take less. Your parents can always send things to you and, believe it or not, Boston has stores.

hahaha.... as a Californian a lot of people try to scare me on how cold the Boston weather can get.. and 1 parka takes like up like a quarter of my bag!...

would you consider 2 large sized luggages, 2 medium sized luggages too much "stuff"? well, i will try to downsize my belongings as much as i can... thanks for all the wonderful responses!

We live in northern California, and my S didn't buy a coat until after Thanksgiving. You really should get everything into two large collapsible duffle bags. Bedding can be ordered at Bed Bath & Beyond or Linens and Things in your hometown and you can pick it up in Boston. You should check the permanent threads on how much to bring to college. I think they're in the Parent Cafe.

Will you be going home for Thanksgiving? If so, wear your parka back on the plane when you return to Boston. Until then, you'll be able to layer with a fleece and a hoodie. Kinshasha is right...anything bulky can be ordered and picked up in Boston. There is a BB and Beyond not far from the east end of the campus. Take two suitcases...that's all.
