Question regarding Pass/No Pass

What happens if I take all of my classes Pass/No Pass? Assuming I pass all of my classes, what would my GPA be. Would it be 0.00 or would I not have a GPA. And would I be losing my financial aid, since I need a 2.00 to keep my financial aid?

Only a third of your units can be P/NP, and your major will probably require you to take your classes for a grade.

garfieldliker is correct. The maximum number of P/NP you can take is 1/3 of the units you have already taken (or for which you are enrolled if you are a new student). However, to indulge you, if you could take them all P/NP, my guess is that you would have no GPA. Since P/NP does not lower your GPA (assuming you pass), it does not get counted as a zero.

And, yes, I suspect that if you took all your classes P/NP, you would lose your financial aid.

Actually, I believe you can take more than 1/3 p/np in one semester. It’s just that by the time you graduate you have to have a <1/3 p/np percentage rate out of all units taken. Check with your college advisers. My friend took most of her classes p/np one semester and she said it was fine.

“Passed grades may account for no more than one third of the total completed units taken on the Berkeley campus at the time of graduation (includes Passed grades earned through the Education Abroad Program, UCDC, the University of California Intercampus Exchange Program, and University Extension).”

[Office of Undergraduate Advising: Passed/Not Passed Grades](http://ls-advise.berkeley.edu/registration/pnp.html)

However, you shouldn’t take certain classes without a grade… “Entry Level Writing, Reading & Composition, Foreign Language, Quantitative Reasoning, and most major requirement”

As for Fin Aid, you won’t have a GPA. I don’t know if Fin Aid would give you a grace period or something.

Frankly I’m surprised at the wrong info by the last two posters…

Ohhh, yes … you’re correct birdhouse. I was looking here: [General Catalog - Policies - Grading, Grade Changes, and the Grade Appeal Process](http://www.berkeley.edu/catalog/policies/grades.html), but at the end of the sentence, it clearly says, “… limited to one-third of the total units that you have taken and passed on the Berkeley campus AT THE TIME YOUR DEGREE IS AWARDED.” I missed that last part. Sorry, OP. So I guess if you are a new freshman, disregarding whether or not you should, you CAN take all your classes P/NP. What do you know? It’s my first mistake ever. LOL! ;-)

I think it’s possible to avoid taking major classes your first semester, especially if you are in L&S undeclared. After all, how is your counselor going to know what major you are pursuing? So it looks like it is technically possible to take 13+ units P/NP. Do advisers even check up on you? I never talked with my adviser the whole time I was there.
