question regarding recommendations

Hi,

I have a question regarding the recommendation letters. Some schools, if not all, gives some questions for the recommender to answer. For example Columbia's questions are:
1. What is your relationship to, and how long have you known the applicant? Is this person still employed by your organization? If not, when did he/she depart?
2. Please provide a short list of adjectives describing the applicant’s strengths.

.... There a total of 9 questions.

Should the recommender answer the questions all together in an essay format or should he answer questions one by one. In both cases, what should be the optimum word count?

Thanks

Generally for recommendations, if the school has a form for your reference to fill out, then your reference can answer the questions one by one within the provided space. If there isn’t a form, then you reference need to write it in a letter (1 page, single space would work).
