I'm in my freshman year right now, and considering transferring out of state. My financial aid currently comes from florida bright futures and florida pre-paid. I didn't qualify for anything from FAFSA other than what was merit-based. When I transfer, would I possibly qualify for financial aid, considering living expenses and tuition will have risen considerably higher? Also, I currently am not claimed as an independent, as I have some minute support from my parents.

I don't know if it matters, but I'm looking at colleges in states such as North Carolina, California, Illinois, and New York.

Thanks guys,

Have I stumped you, collegeconfidential?

Probably wont receive much aid anywhere, need too compete for some outside scholarships, and you meant to say “dependent”

Under federal rules if you have not been legally determined as indpendent from your parents by a court, or become married or a member of the U.S. armed forces then you cannot be classified as independent and your parents income regardless of the level of financial support will be used to calculate your financial need under FAFSA. The previous poster’s reference to limited financial rersorces available to transfers is correct. Even with the increasing tuition costs UF is still an educational bargain, albiet not as attractive as it used to be. Fortunately, it is not nearly as bad as the University of California’s current quagmire. With wildly escalating tuition, insuffient class space and courses and other difficulties. If current admission trends continue UF will surpass 32,000 applications for the Class of 2016 which will bring the effective admission rate to about 36%.
