My son is going to a state school in CA. We have lived in CA for 20+ years. If we move out of state, would we be paying out of state tuition? I thought I’d ask here first. Thanks.
depends on the state actually
If he is already attending a California University and you move out of state, he will continue to receive California in-state tuition for the remainder of his undergrad.
Thank you!
I would verify with the school just for piece of mind but it should not be an issue if he graduated from a CA HS and remains in California.
Even if he loses California residency due to your moving out of state (it is not entirely clear from UC and CSU web sites whether there is any requirement to prove residency after initial enrollment for later semesters or quarters), if he graduated from high school in California after three years attendance and was not on a non-immigrant visa, then he will be able to get California resident tuition under AB 540 provisions.
Yes, @Gumbymom. We will verify with school. Thank you!
@ucbalumnus Thank you!
We are in a reverse situation. My son may attend a UC in the fall and we are planning to soon move to California from Texas (my husband is originally from Ca) Do you know specifics of how hard it is down the line for him to get in state tuition as both he and both parents would be Ca residents? I think it was 12 months residence with a job but we’re are semi-retired. TIA
@Gumbymom can answer the question about CA residency once you move there.
The big question I would have is…can your student start as an OOS resident and expect to gain instate status in the future?
When are you planning to make the move?
If the move will be made prior to admission to the UC’s, then it can become a gray area and you should contact each school on their residency tuition policy.
If a student is eligible for California residency when he or she enters/enrolls in the university, the schools do not review that student’s residency again, unless he or she breaks enrollment and must re-apply to the university.
Definitely get any information in writing/email in case there are issues later. Once a student enrolls, they will be expected to fill out the SLR (statement of legal resident) and as stated above, they normally will not review or ask for the document again after the student enrolls and attends.
It would be probably during their freshman year. So would start as OOS but not sure when it would be feasible to transition to in state. I think after 12 months you can petition.
@parent-21: I am sorry, I read your original question wrong. If it is a permanent move to California, it will take up to 1 year (366 days) to establish CA residency from the time you relocate so for sure OOS fees for the first year at least. CA requires specific documentation that you will make California your permanent home.
