Question regarding which college would be better for me to go financially

May 1st is the Deadline for highschool seniors to make a decision for college pay the tuition deposit and start enrolling for college. I’ve been a lurker on this subreddit for a while and seen how life changing it can be and how it truly helps people. Im deciding between fiu and ucf both are great schools but I dont want to have to take out loans to go to college. This is all new to me so im still confused. I would like a break down of the cost of attendance, housing, and transportation. http://prntscr.com/f2i0vx < aid for fiu http://prnt.sc/f2i0g8< aid for ucf
I also have 2000 from scholarships regardless of where i go. I live 4 hours from ucf and 40 minutes from fiu I would be living on campus for both. Please help me decided. If i HAVE to take out a loan i dont want it to be more than 2000. Thanks in advance

Sorry…I do NOT open links on this site.

What is your net cost at each of these colleges?

What are your parents saying about the costs?

those are screen shots ill see if i can post the attachments, and this is more new to my parents than, me since they aren’t from the U.S

Once more. I do not open links that posters put on this forum. Sorry…just don’t do it.

What is the net cost at each school?

You don’t need to post an attachment…just post the amount here in your response.

Is the net cost affordable for your family?

The website at ucf says $21,834 for tuition, room and board, books, transportation
fiu says
Room & Board $10,702 Florida International University
In-State Tuition $6,497 Florida International University
Other Expenses $4,520

(source schools website)

@3nglish

So are you saying you got NO financial aid at all from either school?

So your cost to attend UCF would be about $22,000 a year

Your cost to attend FIU would be about the same?

Or…did you receive financial aid from either of these colleges? And if so…how much?

It appears that the student was offered $9,900 (not counting loans) from FIU and $8,320 (not counting loans) from UCF.

your net cost at UCF looks to be $8320.

Your net cost at FIU is $9909.

Is that correct?

So…if you are looking for the less expensive school…UCF has a lower out of pocket cost for your family.

That’s not the cost its how much, the schools are giving me, i dont know the net cost myself. That’s one of the things im asking assistance with

It appears to me that FIU costs a little less overall, offered you a little more in aid, and is closer to home, so your actual transportation costs will be less. FIU seems to be a better deal financially.

Look on the portals for the schools, and you should see what costs will be billed to you, or you can look on the general website for the tuition, fees, and the average cost of room and board (we don’t know what you selected).

Although not listed, you will be able to also take $2000 in unsubsidized loans (for a total of $5500). The costs are very similar and the awards are too. The ‘additional expenses’ are amount you pay for the things you choose, and while some of those things are necessary (transportation, books, personal incidentals) you control how much you spend and they should be similar at these two schools.

FIU’s tuition is $6500 and R&B is $10500, so $17000. You will receive $9909 plus $5500 loan. $17k-15409=$1591 to be billed to you. You have $2000 in an outside scholarship so you’ll have $400 to put toward you incidentals.

UCF’s tuition is about $6400 and r&b about $10k, so a total billed cost of $16400. You are receiving $7240. plus $5500 in government loans = net cost of $3660. You have $2000 as an outside scholarship so you need $1660, plus your OOP expenses.

You are comparing two very similar offers but FIU will be about $2000 cheaper.

thank you so much that put alot of things in perspective for me!!

Thanks @twoinanddone glad you provided the net costs.

The OP did not accept the SUBSIDIZED loans yet. He should accept those first…then if he can’t make up the difference, then, yes…the unsubsidized Loans are available.

Very little difference in cost; It would be around a 5k difference in cost over 4 years. I’d pick whichever college you like more.

Don’t forgot the cost of health insurance if you are not covered under your parent’s policy. The policy has to meet the school’s requirements.

Any decent anti-virus program will catch bad things in links. I have an adblocker and a tracker-blocker too, and (knock on wood) have not gotten malware or a virus in many years. If I accidentally click on a funky link, my browser pops up a big red alert letting me know that I shouldn’t go on.
