Question to all vegetarians

1: Race/Gender

2: Type of vegetarianism

3: Why did you become vegetarian?

4: Why are you continuing with your vegetarianism?

5a: If your plate contains a chunk of meat in it, what would you do? (a) scream and throw the entire plate away. (b) remove the meat and surrounding vegetables from the dish. (c) cave in and eat it - remembering that the meat will become food waste if you don't eat it

5b: What if your plate did not contain a chunk of meat, but rather, tiny particles of meat scattered about? Or if say, the sauce contains a little bit of pork?

6: Height/Weight:

7: If you had children, would you put them under a vegetarian diet?

8: What are your political and religious views?
- you don't have to take this, but you can if you'd like:
<a href="http://www.neo-libertarian.com/polquiz.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.neo-libertarian.com/polquiz.html</a></p>

9: Are there any obstacles that you face in social acceptance of your vegetarianism?

10: How do you feel about non-vegetarians? Have you ever proselytized?

1: Chinese Male
2: Ovo-vegetarian
=> Was vegan for approx. 6 months, but acquiesced to parental pressure, provided that the eggs were organic. I won't be living with them for much longer, so I won't do that much more harm to the ecosystem by acquiescing to egg consumption.
3: PETA's propaganda appealed to my dislike of speciesism. Seriously. I was an impressionable 7th grader who stumbled across its website
4: Many reasons, though I've toyed around with moral relativism, which diminished my erstwhile support of animal rights. So I remain vegetarian because I've lost my appetite for meat. Secondary reasons I use to justify this are (a) vegetarians are at lower risk of food poisoning, (b) toxins accumulate in the food chain, (c) lower risk of ischemic heart disease, (d) meat is SO wasteful (90% of corn/soybeans are fed to animals, and all of it combined takes a HUGE amount of land area + water), (e) again, meat is so disgusting I can't even look at it. And for the plain reason that there isn't a good reason to eat meat anymore.
5a: Vary between (a) and (b), depending on my mood
5b: Vary again (but I'm becoming more logical, so I guess I might acquiesce in such a situation, using the logic that even herbivores may accidentally consume a few particles of meat, and that any animal can lose a few meat "particles" without dying)
6: 5 feet 3 inches, 100 pounds
7: I don't plan on having children, but under theoretical case, yes.
8: Libertarian/Anarcho-Communist Agnostic

Radical/Conservative: -3
Liberal-Populist: 21
Capitalist-Socialist: 20

I wonder if I'm the only libertarian vegetarian around here. :p

9: Mostly with parents (Chinese parents aren't especially fond of vegetarianism for some reason)
10: Meh, I don't care anymore. I proselytized in 8th grade, but quit afterwards. :p

anarcho-communist? dude, that's like saying you're a messianic jew, or a black white supremacist like dave chapelle

1: Race/Gender
*White Female

2: Type of vegetarianism
*Lacto-ovo (dairy and eggs but nothing else)

3: Why did you become vegetarian?
*At the time everyone else was doing it, but i was the only one who kept with it for more than a week. Now its been 11 years.

4: Why are you continuing with your vegetarianism?
*Health, animal rights, environmental, meat disgusts me.

*5a: If your plate contains a chunk of meat in it, what would you do? (a) scream and throw the entire plate away. (b) remove the meat and surrounding vegetables from the dish. (c) cave in and eat it - remembering that the meat will become food waste if you don't eat it
I would refuse to eat it. Totally grosses me out.

5b: What if your plate did not contain a chunk of meat, but rather, tiny particles of meat scattered about? Or if say, the sauce contains a little bit of pork?
*Ugh. would not eat it. In restaurants I always ask if there are any meat products in it.

6: Height/Weight:
*5'2, 105

7: If you had children, would you put them under a vegetarian diet?
I would refuse to cook meat, but if they wanted to eat it outside the house, go ahead.

8: What are your political and religious views?
*very liberal; jewish

9: Are there any obstacles that you face in social acceptance of your vegetarianism?
*nope. although its annoying when restaurants dont have veggie options.

10: How do you feel about non-vegetarians? Have you ever proselytized
*As long as I dont have to eat it, they can eat whatever they want. I definitely support people who are consciously avoiding meat, and encourage people to eat free range/organic meat if they eat it at all.

1: Race/Gender
White Female

2: Type of vegetarianism
Lacto Vegetarian (Need dairy cause my body can't handle soy for some reason)

3: Why did you become vegetarian?
My friend sold his cow to be slaughtered. I loved that cow.

4: Why are you continuing with your vegetarianism?
Same reason as above.

5a: If your plate contains a chunk of meat in it, what would you do? (a) scream and throw the entire plate away. (b) remove the meat and surrounding vegetables from the dish. (c) cave in and eat it - remembering that the meat will become food waste if you don't eat it
B.

5b: What if your plate did not contain a chunk of meat, but rather, tiny particles of meat scattered about? Or if say, the sauce contains a little bit of pork?
Get something else to eat.

6: Height/Weight:
5'11" `145 ish

7: If you had children, would you put them under a vegetarian diet?
No. It's a personal choice that they will make.

8: What are your political and religious views?
- you don't have to take this, but you can if you'd like:
<a href="http://www.neo-libertarian.com/polquiz.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.neo-libertarian.com/polquiz.html</a>
Religion: Neopagan- Don't follow a specific religion
Political Views: I hate both democrats and republicans. Am conservative on a few things but on a whole, liberal.
Quizzes:
Radical/Conservative- 21
Liberal-Populist- 14
Capitalist-Socialist- -14

9: Are there any obstacles that you face in social acceptance of your vegetarianism?
Not really. The only obstacle is having to order my own pizza or something.

10: How do you feel about non-vegetarians? Have you ever proselytized?
I have no opinions about non-vegetarians, it is a personal choice and they can do whatever they wish. It is their lives.

Oh and as a note. I HATE PETA. I think that they give a very bad name to vegetarians with some of the things they do. They started off with good intentions but have become far too radical.

b. I definitely wouldn't touch it.

1: South Asian/Female

2: Lacto-vegetarian.

3: Initially family/religious reasons (my family's Hindu and pretty orthodox, so meat doesn't enter the house anyway).

4: Once I was old enough to have the choice, I didn't really want meat, and I've stuck to that. Bit passive really, but no less stringent for all that.

5a: Cross between a and b. Doubt I'd scream, but I'd definitely be put off eating.

5b: Definitely not touching that.

6: 5'7.5", 130 lbs.

7: I won't cook meat on principle, but I'm not preventing them from eating it elsewhere.

8: What are your political and religious views?
According to that, radical, liberal, and capitalist, which sound about right. I'm a not-really-practicing Hindu, but I respect and like the religion; occasionally pendulum back and forth towards atheism.

9: None. I'm lucky in that respect -- culturally vegetarian family, mostly vegetarian (or at least very tolerant due to necessity) society.

10: Indifferent. I don't really get preachy, and I dislike PETA myself.

I'm really quite unsure about my political views. I'm not going to vote or make an effort to change anything (though if it has to do with scaling back public schooling, maybe I would). I'm just listing the political systems that I'm more sympathetic to than any other. I don't know if anarcho-communism would work when the bell curve distribution of intelligence resembles what it is now.

Adding 5c:

===

5c: What about in vitro meat? Meat raised without needing to slaughter an animal? It's actually pretty interesting

6: Height/Weight:

7: If you had children, would you put them under a vegetarian diet?

8: What are your political and religious views?
- you don't have to take this, but you can if you'd like:
<a href="http://www.neo-libertarian.com/polquiz.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.neo-libertarian.com/polquiz.html</a></p>

9: Are there any obstacles that you face in social acceptance of your vegetarianism?

10: How do you feel about non-vegetarians? Have you ever proselytized?

My response to 5c: Would prefer another option, but if given no other option, perhaps.

(I wonder if animal intestine in vitro would be disgusting. After all, it'd be bacteria free)...

I also posted surveys on two other topics. Though this is hardly controlled. :p CC's much more liberal than average.

c. I wouldn't eat it, but only because I find the idea of meat so utterly repulsive that I couldn't bring myself to. I don't have any ethical objections to it, however, and would support it as an alternative for others. (I actually read an article about this in VegNews a while back... fascinating stuff.)

1: Race/Gender
Asian Indian, Male

2: Type of vegetarianism
I eat dairy products and eggs, but no meat including fish

3: Why did you become vegetarian?
I was kind of raised that way

4: Why are you continuing with your vegetarianism?
I don't really think it's necessary to eat meat, and it would help out the environment, even if it's just me.

5a: If your plate contains a chunk of meat in it, what would you do? (a) scream and throw the entire plate away. (b) remove the meat and surrounding vegetables from the dish. (c) cave in and eat it - remembering that the meat will become food waste if you don't eat it

I'd probably give it to someone else, or do b.

5b: What if your plate did not contain a chunk of meat, but rather, tiny particles of meat scattered about? Or if say, the sauce contains a little bit of pork?

Give it to someone else.

6: Height/Weight:
5'9", or 5'10", like 150 pounds

7: If you had children, would you put them under a vegetarian diet?
Probably

8: What are your political and religious views?
- you don't have to take this, but you can if you'd like:
<a href="http://www.neo-libertarian.com/polquiz.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.neo-libertarian.com/polquiz.html</a>
I think social liberal, moderate with the economy and stuff

9: Are there any obstacles that you face in social acceptance of your vegetarianism?
No

10: How do you feel about non-vegetarians? Have you ever proselytized?
I think it would be nice if they became vegetarians, but I can't really do anything to stop them. And no, I think there really isn't any point in trying to convert other people because it usually won't do anything.

1: Race/Gender
White Female

2: Type of vegetarianism
Vegan

3: Why did you become vegetarian?
I was seven and didn't like the idea of eating animals. of course my mother was also vegetarian, so it wasn't only my own idea.I don't think she pushed me or anything though. gradually I began to realize that eating eggs and dairy caused many of the same problems as meat. so when I was 13 I went totally vegan.

4: Why are you continuing with your vegetarianism?
It's been so long I can't even imagine stopping.

5a: If your plate contains a chunk of meat in it, what would you do? (a) scream and throw the entire plate away. (b) remove the meat and surrounding vegetables from the dish. (c) cave in and eat it - remembering that the meat will become food waste if you don't eat it
Closest to A. I wouldn't eat it, but I don't think I'd scream about it...

5b: What if your plate did not contain a chunk of meat, but rather, tiny particles of meat scattered about? Or if say, the sauce contains a little bit of pork?
Here I might just scream. there's no way I'd eat it, and I probably wouldn't eat anything else from wherever it was.

5c: What about in vitro meat? Meat raised without needing to slaughter an animal? It's actually pretty interesting.
Personally I could never eat it. it's definitely better than killing the animals, but I think it could cause a lot of different problems.

6: Height/Weight:
5'5, 130 pounds.

7: If you had children, would you put them under a vegetarian diet?
yes, until they were old enough to choose.

8: What are your political and religious views?
- you don't have to take this, but you can if you'd like:
<a href="http://www.neo-libertarian.com/polquiz.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.neo-libertarian.com/polquiz.html</a>
Politcal test: republican capitalist-leaning libertarian
Religion: Athiest

9: Are there any obstacles that you face in social acceptance of your vegetarianism?
Social acceptance? I don't think there is any. around here people don't even know the word vegan. and they think not eating animal products means I'll eat shrimp... most of my friends are used to me, but still argue it sometimes. there are also the people who are really good about trying to understand, but just don't quite get the concept.

10: How do you feel about non-vegetarians? Have you ever proselytized?
Since I'm usually around non-vegetarians I'm pretty used to watching people eat meat, so it doesn't bother me that much. I usually try not to force my opinion on them, unless they keep arguing it with me, or try to get me to eat meat. I did successfully convert my sisters, but that was years ago.

1: Race/Gender
Asian Indian/Male

2: Type of vegetarianism
Don't know (I mean I eat no egg)

3: Why did you become vegetarian?
I have been brought up eating vegetarian food. It is also a religious principle so my parent have enforced it upon me to have vegetarian food even though I don't believe in the idea of religion.

4: Why are you continuing with your vegetarianism?
Same as above.

5a: If your plate contains a chunk of meat in it, what would you do? (a) scream and throw the entire plate away. (b) remove the meat and surrounding vegetables from the dish. (c) cave in and eat it - remembering that the meat will become food waste if you don't eat it
b. Remove the meat and surrounding vegetables from the dish.

5b: What if your plate did not contain a chunk of meat, but rather, tiny particles of meat scattered about? Or if say, the sauce contains a little bit of pork?
Wouldn't eat the food. But won't scream.

5c: What about in vitro meat? Meat raised without needing to slaughter an animal? It's actually pretty interesting.
Same as Q3.

6: Height/Weight:
5'9", 64kg

7: If you had children, would you put them under a vegetarian diet?
Yes

8: What are your political and religious views?
- you don't have to take this, but you can if you'd like:
I do not have any political views.
Religion: Don't know what I am called (A person who believes in god but not religion)

9: Are there any obstacles that you face in social acceptance of your vegetarianism?
None till date.

10: How do you feel about non-vegetarians? Have you ever proselytized?
I am not against any non-veg. Many of my friends are non-vegs but I really don't care. Each person eats what they like. As long as they don't force me I am fine with it.

Race/Gender
African-American Female

2: Type of vegetarianism
Vegan

3: Why did you become vegetarian?
I got tired of the taste of meat and didn't like the idea of eating animals. I have been vegan for five years and going on.

4: Why are you continuing with your vegetarianism?
Why not? I don't desire the taste of meat, as a whole I am healthier, and I still do not like the idea of eating animals. I can't even imagine not being a vegan; it's a way of life for me.

5a: If your plate contains a chunk of meat in it, what would you do? (a) scream and throw the entire plate away. (b) remove the meat and surrounding vegetables from the dish. (c) cave in and eat it - remembering that the meat will become food waste if you don't eat it

None of those, I would refuse to eat the meal and give the plate to someone else.

5b: What if your plate did not contain a chunk of meat, but rather, tiny particles of meat scattered about? Or if say, the sauce contains a little bit of pork?

^ See answer 5a...

5c: What about in vitro meat? Meat raised without needing to slaughter an animal? It's actually pretty interesting

See answer 5b.. I still would not eat it.

6: Height/Weight: 5'6; 140 (I'm a modern dancer, so I have muscle)

7: If you had children, would you put them under a vegetarian diet?
No, I believe that being a vegetarian/vegan is a personal choice. I would first expose them to all types of food (my husband in the future would probably have to prepare the meat dishes, because I know I wouldn't) , and eventually let them choose what they would like to be.

8: What are your political and religious views?
Liberal (but I have no party loyalties), I am not particularly relgious; I believe that there is a higher being, but I still need to learn more about other religions, before I can truly say what religion I believe in.

9: Are there any obstacles that you face in social acceptance of your vegetarianism?
Yes, I always hear, "You are the first black person that I know that is vegan/vegetarian", sometimes I get the "You act white" comments, too.

10: How do you feel about non-vegetarians? Have you ever proselytized?
I don't care; my whole family are non-vegans; my friends are non-vegans. As long if they don't force me to try and eat meat or try to preach to me about my eating habits, then it okay with me.

Okay, sorry, putting an 11) in:

11) how do you feel about research on animals?

completely, totally against research on animals. it usually doesn't even really prove anything, since animals are different from humans.

1: Race/Gender

White female

2: Type of vegetarianism

Mostly vegan but lacto ovo on rare occasions, like social occasions where I have dinner at someone's house. Most people I know can understand the not eating meat part, but cutting out dairy products is something unfathomable.

3: Why did you become vegetarian?

I had an enlightenment-like moment when I realized the hypocrisy in keeping animals as pets and eating animals. I had entertained such thoughts before, but it never really struck me because I always had a voice in the back of my mind saying, "They're just animals." I have had my beliefs solidified through religious, environmental, and health reasons in that order.

4: Why are you continuing with your vegetarianism?

Well... meat is disgusting, and my reasons are still valid.

5a: If your plate contains a chunk of meat in it, what would you do? (a) scream and throw the entire plate away. (b) remove the meat and surrounding vegetables from the dish. (c) cave in and eat it - remembering that the meat will become food waste if you don't eat it

I wouldn't eat it. I'd try to give it to someone else.

5b: What if your plate did not contain a chunk of meat, but rather, tiny particles of meat scattered about? Or if say, the sauce contains a little bit of pork?

I definitely wouldn't eat it.

5c:

That's just nasty. I don't think I could divorce the revulsions I have for eating animals from meat.

6: Height/Weight:

5'8" 140

7: If you had children, would you put them under a vegetarian diet?

I would cook them only vegan food, but I wouldn't object to them eating meat in other settings.

8: What are your political and religious views?

Very liberal/Buddhist

9: Are there any obstacles that you face in social acceptance of your vegetarianism?

I get mocked occasionally.

10: How do you feel about non-vegetarians? Have you ever proselytized?

I can't help thinking eww when I notice that somebody is eating meat, but I certainly don't hold anything against non-vegetarians (I was one too not so long ago). I don't proselytize. I will respond to questions about my beliefs honestly when asked, however.

11:

I'm against it. That we aren't utilizing more accurate and more ethical methods I find repulsive.

i just support cruelty to vegetables, that's all.
