question to McGill applicants

Hey all,

just wanted to ask you guys...where does McGill rank to you on the list of colleges you applied to? is it your number 1, or a safety school? Or have you not made up your mind about what it's place is in your applications?

I'm just curious :)
noelle

1st choice for me...for many great reasons.

I haven't really made up my mind but I'm giving it a lot of consideration given its location, reputation, and economic advantages.

1st choice for me...
mcgill's reputition is too good

When I apply next year, it will be in the middle. My preference will go Chicago, Toronto, McGill (all reaches), UNC CH (relative match, I'm in-state), and NC State (safety). I'm not really going to apply to that many colleges because I would be fine at Chapel Hill, and if I don't get in I'll just go to community college and transfer.

It's near the top of my list, mainly because it has a great reputation and Montreal is my favorite city (yes, ahead of Boston and New York). I can definitely see myself going there, and it is not as hard to get into as some of the other schools I am applying to.

can anyone please tell me my chances at mcgill, ive posted this in abt 10 threads but no answer.. will appreciate replies..

im a Canadian citizen living in Pakistan.

stats:
8 GCE Olevels 4As 2Bs 2Cs
5 GCE AS Level 1 A 4B
4 GCE Advanced Level predicted 4 As (eco, acc, math, business)

Headboy of the school current year (head of student council)
participant in all sports and activities
high school current gpa 3.7
class rank is 4/30 (in a v.small school)
couple of voluntary services at hospital
and one paid internship at a bank last summer

thats about it..
im really nervous abt mcgill :s

also my personal opinion is that mcgill is a reach.. considering my bad olevel grades.. they might kick my app right after reading olevel grades

homes, this may not be the best place, where all pretty much americans, and while i personally know what the a/o level system is, i have no idea what is good and or what is good for mcgill, but ill say your gpa will definatly get you into the arts section

Most definitely tied for first with UChicago and (possibly) Tufts. I love Montreal with all my heart, and McGill's language and soc. programs are great!

Probrably 2nd on my list(to UC Berk). Mainly because of the language and country difference. Somewhat because of the lack of sports, I've always been a big college sports fan and it does have an impact on where I will ultimately go. I might sound crazy, but school is more then just hitting the books.

you're so right, science_please, that college is much much more than the academic life. Sometimes people on this board get a bit carried away with the academic prestige of places, to the point where they forget to ask themselves if they'd truly be happy at a given institution. UC Berkley and McGill are probably fairly close in terms of the type of education you'd get, so you really have to ask yourself, what else is important? I don't think you're crazy for taking sports into account--I based my decision partially on sports (was there a major leage/college baseball team around...though look how that turned out, one year with the 'spos and then they leave). There are sports and McGill but they're waaay less of a big deal than sports in the states.

I hope you get in to both places :)

Thanks. Yea, I want to be in the student section of a basketball or football game next year. This is one of the reasons why I might still go to Rutgers instead of McGill(provided I get in).

How are intramurals at McGill? Are the facilities good? I'm most interested in basketball, not that I'm spectacular, I just like the game. I'd imagine that a lot of people in McGill area tend to favor hockey.

gym facilities are pretty nice, and we have good sports compared to other canadian schools. Hockey gets the biggest turnout, but we do have basketball (infact James Naismith, who is credited for inventing basketball, is a McGill alumni!) and American football (another useless bit of trivia, the first college football game was between McGill and Harvard). In fact, McGill football is fun to watch because of the opposing team, where you get these huge burly football players with names like "jean luc" :D

intramurals are good, in that a lot of people participate and have a good time. The intramural program i think is pretty large, in that there seems to be something for everyone, no matter what the skill level/comittment level.

but I don't really know...I use the gym facility and the pool...that's about it. Two of my floormates are big into track, and they like that.

harpgirl can u reply to my post please
thx

hey :) sorry I didn't see it earlier...I'm not really all that familiar with the british system, but it seems that your assesment is right in that your O level grades are a bit low, however I think you definitely still have a shot because your GPA is good and your other grades were good. But I can't really offer that much of an opinion because I'm only familiar with the canadian and american systems

best of luck!

My first choice was Yale, which I was rejected from. So now its a toss up between the other 6 or so schools I'm applied to. But I really started to think about it, and I think McGill is becoming my #1 school right now.

sorry to hear about Yale, prospect :(

However, while I can't guarantee anything, I think you'd have a good experience at McGill :)

Oh yeah! I know I would!

I live in MA, so I came up in...October? to visit the campus because my mom told me about it (I had never even considered going to college outside the US, I didnt know that McGill had the reputation it did). Montr

Sorry - first football game was played in New Jersey between Rutgers and Princeton. Harvard likes to claim it's first in everything. Harvard is definitely first in the number of classes taught by teaching assistants.
