Question to previous transfers

Hi,

I was wondering how useful departmental credits were after the transferring process. I just got accepted as a transfer for the next fall semester, and it seems like most of my classes are transferable as departmental credit. The site says that these credits are good for fulfilling distribution requirements and whatnot. Since none of my computer science classes, however, transfer over as equivalent courses for my core classes as a CS major, would that somehow put me in danger of graduating later because I’d have to retake all the prerequisites? Also, how lenient are the credit evaluators or advisors when asking for transfer credit to fulfill prereqs for classes? Thanks.

It’s ideal if the exact course transfers over, but departmental credit doesn’t hold you back or anything. Basically what happens if the course is required for your major is you talk to an advisor and they fill out an online system form to log that you have that course done.
For example, I took the equivalent of Physics 401 at my previous university, but it transferred over as departmental credit. I don’t have to retake it, I just skip ahead. Then when I’m about to graduate I have to make sure that my advisors checked off that I have 401 done, because otherwise it just won’t show up in the system since it’s basically generic credit. It’s not forgotten or anything, though.
Talk to an advisor about this stuff when you get the chance. It’s somewhat to their discretion if the course you took qualifies as enough of an equivalent.
