Question!

Hey
How is Dartmouth in the biology/ biochemistry or psychology department?
I always thought Dartmouth was more of an English/history type of school, but I'm definitly more math/science.
I really like that Dartmouth is relatively small, and it's up north (I'm a Texan). I'm just reluctant to apply it the school's atmosphere is totally focused on english related things.
Oh, and how is the social like at Dartmouth? Lots of school spirit/ sports/ activities?

Bio/biochem departments are very good. DHMC (hospital associated w/ the med school) is THE hospital for most of Vermont and New Hampshire. If you are female, Dartmouth also has WISP, women in science program (and I believe they've somewhat expanded to math), that makes it very, very easy for you to get a PAID internship your freshman year. Also if you're female, just this fall a Women in Math group got started up, and I know it is very strongly associted w/the math grad program here too, and they do mentoring, sponsored talks, etc.
There is already a lot posted here about the social scene, you'll just have to peruse....

In today's issue of the Dartmouth

In a move designed add flexibility to the biology major and alleviate student concerns, the College's biology department is planning to institute sweeping changes that could take effect as early as next fall.

About two months ago, biology professors Elizabeth Smith and Mark McPeek led a retreat to discuss modifications that the department hopes will make the program less rigid and more up-to-date.

"The most significant change made is that there are four majors now," Smith said. "We're changing to a system where there is one major with many concentrations that can be tailored to students' specific needs."

The new program will offer five foundation courses, of which biology majors will have to take three. After that, students can choose between 17 or 18 concentrations, allowing them greater flexibility in their interests.

Human biology, an enormously popular class, would count for credit in the restructured major.

thats pretty awesome. thanks for the replies. I'm going to apply regular.

Dartmouth accepts only the common app right? So is there like a Part1 or is that the supplement?

There is the pre-application, the common app and the peer rec. That's it ouside of the usual stuff

hey kitkat,

from what i know the psych dept is pretty amazing at dmouth..if you want, i can give you the names of a few bio/psych majors to speak with..
dartmouth is definitely not just focused on "english related things"..i'm a geography modified with history major, if that helps at all..

the social life..hmm depends what you like to be involved in..the frats/sororities definitely play a big part in the parties..but there are off campus parties too..and the programming board does stuff..concerts, comedians, etc.

hope this helps!
