Question

Dean J-

Do you happen to have any more of a breakdown to the number of applications applied EA with regards to in-state/out of state? I know 11,000 something prospective students applied early, but was wondering how many of those are in-state vs. out of state. Also, do you have any projected acceptance rates for in-state vs. out of state yet?

Thanks and go hoos!

In the end, it won’t matter, because the ratio of in-state vs. out of state enrolled students will be the same by the time everything is said and done in May.

The key figures in early admission will be the ratio of IS EA applicants to total IS applicants for the class of 2016 and OOS EA applicants to total OOS applicants. UVa will know that before issuing EA decisions, and that may affect the respective acceptance rates.

In a recent year around 80% of IS acceptances to UNC came during the EA round because the vast majority of IS students apply to UNC EA. I would expect Virginia students to follow that pattern as IS high schools become more familiar with EA at UVa.

We aren’t trying to fill the class early.

Dean J – I certainly wasn’t suggesting that you and your colleagues in admissions are trying to fill the class early. The reasons for instituting an EA process were well explained when the decision to do so was announced.

That being said, if, as at peer institutions with mandated IS/OOS ratios, the majority of IS students start getting their applications in for consideration in the EA pool, logic dictates that over time the percentage of the IS class made up of IS EA applicants will increase, and may perhaps become the majority of IS students accepted. Likewise, if at some point OOS applicants skew toward applying early, then the University may accept a large percentage of the OSS class EA as well.

Until the school has a couple EA periods under its belt, no one will know for sure how EA will work out.

Dean J- I second what AVA55 said, I was just wondering. I am sorry if my question was out of line and in no way was I insinuating you needed to hurry up and fill the class.

Correct. :)
