Question

If I send a letter to Harvard and Yale saying that I included the wrong supplemental essay and attach the correct one will they think I'm an idiot and automatically reject me?

Perhaps I should have made my title a little more descriptive...

Why does it matter? Does each essay talk about the other school?

i dont understand how people who are supposedly good enough for harvard and the like would attach the wrong essay to their application...wouldn't you double check something as important as your application?

Sorry. I wasn't very clear there.

Once I submitted my supplemental essays for Harvard and Yale (happened to be the same, but no mention of the school or anything), I wrote an essay for a different school that I think is much better.

I was thinking that I could just send each school a letter asking them if they could consider the new essay, which I would attach, instead of the one I already sent in.

I think it would definitely improve my application, but I don't want to do it if they think it looks bad that I am changing something.

I'm not really sure.

They wouldn't reject you for it. I think they would proabbly read it and consider it, but I don't know how much weight they would give it. There is also the possibility they would ignore it, but I doubt it.

This would basically mean three essays, though, which is basically too many to have. I don't think they would substitute for you.

So, I'm not really sure.

They would refuse to accept the extra essay because it is submited late and other applicants dont have the luxury of submiting extra essays later. Point is, if they take your essay, which you've had more time to edit and perfect, then they would have to give everyone an opportunity to send in a new, better essay after the deadline.
This is my reasoning.

It isn't unusual to update an app after the deadline if you win some award or something, but adcoms don't want to read extra essays. Does either school allow for supplemental/optional essays? It would be okay to send it in as an addition, but asking to substitute it seems a bit much for me.

Alright, I'm just going to leave everything how it is.

Thanks for the help.

"yes just tell them you want to revise your application. btw, you can still send essays even if it's after the deadline. My yale rep told me to send an extra essay by the end of January."

"I'm sure they'll take it a day or two late if the main application was submitted on time. It's like sending "supplementary materials," they add it to your file later when they receive it. You can attach a [brief] note stating that you would like to replace the original essay with this one...I don't think the admission officer will mind skipping an essay"

I'm not sure what to do now.
