How full should my high school class schedule be to have better chance of getting into top colleges?

Take as many classes as you can, and make sure that as many as possible are AP or IB. If you are a freshman, make sure to take core classes all four years, and take a foreign language all four years. At many schools, AP classes aren’t offered to freshman, so make sure to take honors classes in their place.

I’m going to be a junior next year and I’m taking 5 AP courses and a regular language course. I going to take 2 online half semester courses over the summer that will count for high school credit, but I can take up to 8 courses during the regular school year. Should I fill up my 2 open periods during the regular school year with extra AP courses? My high school offers a good amount of AP classes.

5 AP courses is a very, very good amount. That would definitely qualify as rigorous. Take more if you feel that you can handle it. Remember though, that it is better to get A’s in the ones you are taking, than B’s if you take two more.
