if i was just waitlisted at wash u, should i accept either waitlisted/rejected from duke? i am from nc

querida~

My son was waitlisted at WashU last spring; however, he was accepted at [color=blue]DUKE/color, Penn (with acceptance into the elite Vagelos Program), and JHU with its highest merit award.

One has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with the other, and you simply cannot make those types of assumptions.

I wish you the BEST with your Duke decision!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Fingers crossed for an acceptance soon!!!!!!!!!!!!

Keep your chin up~

p.s. Forgot to add, he is a VERY happy freshman at DUKE this year!!!!!!

thank you, thank you, that really gives me hope! duke is my number one by FAR and i am really anxious to hear back. i actually thought wash u might be a little easier to get into? but that is obviously quite the misconception!

thanks!

DEFINITELY DO NOT lose hope!!!! From the numbers I've seen, your being from NC should work to your advantage. We live in KS.

Also, WashU is very peculiar in its acceptance pattern. Oftentimes it rejects top candidates because it thinks they will have many other options and figures that they might choose one of those others. WashU favors those with intense demonstrated interest for that reason. My son never visited there, and I think that definitely worked against him.

I didn't even apply to WashU because they tried to steal our hospital from us (I lived in Memphis at the time). I received a call from one of their recruiters about applying (no idea why - I wasn't really on the radar at my high school, much less anywhere else) and they seemed shocked when I told them that :)

How did they try to steal your hospital from y'all???

I think it's great that you're posting here! Thanks for your contributions!

Wash U. wanted to move St. Francis Children's Hospital from Memphis to St. Louis. Fortunately, the City of Memphis was able to get itself together to provide the resources necessary to keep it.

On another note - I think it's great that parents and families are on here too - y'all can give a perspective that is important and unique for folks figuring out their school choices!

Thanks for the info! That's wonderful that Memphis was able to rally its resources that way. I wish we had a children's hospitial where we live.....

So, you went to Duke and are now a prof there? You must really love it! My son has been in love with Duke for as long as we can remember. We have risked constant criticism (and some vandalism! lol) by having our bball pole painted Duke blue with Duke #1 on it for MANY years while living in here Jayhawk country! My sixth grade son's teachers have offered him MONEY if he'll just NOT wear a Duke t-shirt for ONE day!!! No dice though....

As a mom, I love reading the Duke forums. In many ways, I feel like all of these Dukies are my kids.... :)

You sound like an awesome prof AND person! Kinda makes me wish my son were in Pratt.... ;)

fondly, ~berurah
