I am out of state so i don’t know much about UMass. So i know that it is in several places. I wanted to know which one is the best for an out of state person and for a computer science major? plus is it a nice school? like how are the people and stuff like that.
Is it “easy” to get into and how hard is the honors school to get into?
UMass Amherst is the flagship campus and has a top program for Computer Science - it is ranked very high nationally. UMA is becoming increasingly competitive. The Commonwealth Honors College is likewise becoming more competitive each and every year. In 2014, I was extended an invitation to the CHC with a 3.8 UW GPA and a 1350 CR/M SAT score. Other students at my school who were also admitted to CHC had similar (or higher) stats.
At UMass Boston, Computer Sci is also a popular major though not nearly as prestigious as Amherst’s. UMB admissions are a lot more lax than Amherst as well considering that it is a non-flagship commuter branch of the UMass System. UMB has its own Honors College - out of state students are extended an invitation to the Honors College upon admission if they have a 3.5 (recalculated) GPA and a 1200 CR+M SAT score (or equivalent ACT score.) This invitation also includes a 10,000 dollar scholarship (which reduces COA for OOS students to the standard in-state rate.)
I cannot really speak to Lowell or Dartmouth other than Lowell is very STEM oriented and has top engineering programs relative to other colleges in Massachusetts as well as other public universities nationwide. Dartmouth is probably closely on par with UMB in terms of admission standards.
