question....

my friend is a really good quarterback and was approached by the coach at Columbia...here are the stats

freshman: 3.5
sophmore: 3.6
junior: 3.7 (1 AP)
senior: schedule has about 2 AP

old SATs -- 1090/1600

varsity football and basketball but no other ec's

is there any way he could get in because of football? cuz i know the stats are not good

for a recruited qb the GPA isn't bad really but the SATS look very questionable.

Indirectly related to the OP, I naively thought that Columbia doesn't do athlete recruits as much as the other Ivies (particularly Penn)--so not as many people with low stats get in--because their sports teams suck anyway. Therefore I thought maybe Columbia doesn't care enough to recruit athletes, in order to ensure the high standard of its students. Can anyone enlighten me on this?

I'm not familiar with the stats of recruited athletes, but from the looks of it, his GPA, number of AP's, SAT, and ECs are way below Columbia's average. It would make sense to recruit a very talented athlete if his/her stats/nonathletic qualities are a bit below their average, which may then be excused. But probably not when they are way below. I have no evidence for this; just trying to help by sharing my opinion.

It doesn't hurt to apply.

Well, my friend (I'm from California, San Jose) at Oak Grove High School was recruited (he played TE,FB and was one of the LB) - i know he kept up the GPA with AP classes, but his SATs probably weren't great. He turned Columbia down for San Jose State's Scholarship (and.... a better team?)

if his sat's are that low he can still probably get in if he's a beast at qb... get his sat to 1200 is chances probably double.

The real question is, why would he ever want to qb at Columbia? (I know, I know: "great academics!") But seriously, if this kid is really into football...why the heck Columbia...

columbia gets the majority of its athletic recruits in (i havent heard of any atheltes being denied)

my friend got recruited with like a 3.4 GPA and 1370/1600 SATs....state champion swimmer!

i got in with less than that

Approached by Columbia means nothing. There's only 1 quarterback (plus a few backups). The coach is going to actively recruit, at most, a couple of QBs a year.

Obviously he's not good enough to be the QB at Notre Dame or Florida State. Would you rather play Division I football at Columbia or be some waterboy at a good football school?

what exactly does "division 1" mean?

What division 1 means, is that there are three different divisions in college sports: division 1, division 2, and division 3. Division 1 teams are the teams that professional teams draft from, division 2 teams are slightly worse than division 1, and division 3 teams are almost like regular people who just want to compete at a sport that they played on and off in high school. However, for football division 1 is divided into two parts, division 1A and division 1AA. Division 1A is the real division 1, while 1AA teams are somewhere between 1A and 2. Columbia is 1AA.
