Question

Hello everyone.
I have recently completed my first semester at a highly ranked liberal arts institution, with a 3.91/4.00 gpa. My reason for attending a liberal arts college was to try to discover my interests and pursue them. However, after deciding that I want to pursue a career in teaching, I researched that the college I attend does not offer an education major, and there are only 3 classed in the “education department” as a whole. With this gpa, would it be beneficial for me to transfer to an institution with a reputable education/teaching program, or should I continue at my current college?

Oh, boy, that’s a tough one.

There are some universities that offer teacher certification to people who have earned bachelor’s degrees in other fields. Another option is to get your undergrad degree, then gain licensure through a MEd program. You could get your bachelor’s in a liberal arts major at your current college, then avail yourself of one of these options for licensure.

Or maybe you should transfer out. Perhaps a trip to your current college’s career center is in order. Also, if you know any teachers or school administrators, discuss your options with them.

I am going to suggest that you remain at your current school for the time being but consider doing some volunteer work in schools or places where children congregate to see if you are really interested in working with them.

You’re only one semester in.

I think I would suggest considering transferring to a school that:

  • Is in the state where you eventually hope to teach
  • Will have you certified at graduation.
