What makes Carnegie mellon special? Why did the people that chose to go there make that choice? Just curious

For me I looked into the ECE department and I liked what I saw. Others like the business, art, drama, etc programs. CMU seemed really well-rounded compared to the other schools I looked at.

I visited CMU and a bunch of other schools (USC, Northwestern, Rice) and felt that I fit best at CMU. The CS people are not just geeks- a bunch are artsy or have other interests. I didn't want to go to a party school, and CMU isn't one. At the time, I thought I might want a music minor, and CMU has one (unlike Caltech etc.)

for me it was cmu vs. johns hopkins. they both have really strong biochem programs, but cmu was a lot less "cut-throat" than jhu. at jhu, i got the feeling that everyone is in it for bio/biochem/chem and that its one big competition. that's what my high school was like, and it's the last thing i want my college to be like.

thanks those are good. how is everyone there about sports do people go to games are the teams good?

I think many students choose CMU for its academic rigor. The students work hard all week but unwind and play hard on the weekends. The beauty of it is the diversity of its population. Really there is something for everybody. Pittsburgh was a pleasant surprise and has a lot to offer and explore. As far as sports I am not sure how much school spirit there is. Last year the golf team and the track teams did well. The lacrosse team in its first year in the league went to the playoffs and put on a good show during home games. I am sure any of the teams would appreciate student support and would love to see cheering fans fill the stands. CMU is an incredible school. If you are interested be sure to visit, ask questions and tour the campus.

What KrazyKow said was partly true. CMU isn't a party school like a state school would be, but there are definitely parties if you want it. I'm in a fraternity and I could party every night if I wanted to... so in my eyes the school is a party school. Everyone knows when to work hard, but they also know how to party if you're up for it.

CMU isn't a party school in a way that kids will burst into the library while you're studying and carry you out to drink.

There's something for everyone.

To XSibagin: You wanted info on sport teams. I'm sure this isn't exactly the sports you are talking about but on Sunday the CMU team won the World Championship Robo Cup Soccer in Germany. CMU take their robots seriously.
