Question:

I really don't want to take the math SAT II. I'm not sure if some of the colleges I'm applying to require it though. My problem is that some of the websites have different info from what they told me at admissions sessions. So here is a list of the schools I'm applying to.

Cornell (ED) CAS
JHU
UPenn
Brandeis
Rutgers
BU
CMU

If anyone can tell me if the Math II is required for any of those schools I would be eternally grateful! :)

thanks,
E

hopkins penn cmu and cornell will demand/'recommend' the IIC probably
you dont need it for penn if you did the ACT. if you want to do engineering IIC for all

Cornell's College of Arts and Sciences does NOT require a math SAT Subject Test. It simply asks for any two SAT Subject Tests.

In those instances where what you were told at an admissions session disagrees with the Web site, it might be a good idea to e-mail the college admissions office for clarification. You don't have to say "I don't want to take a math SAT Subject Test." Just say, "The admissions officer said that you require SAT Subject Tests in _____ and , but your Web site says that you require ___. Which is correct?"

You could be like my son who seems to be trying to form his college list around two basic criteria: No SAT IIs and no foreign language requirement. ;)

I, too, have a question..... When I read various college books (Princeton Review and others) the top colleges seem to say: SAT I and 2 or 3 SAT II's OR the ACT. Does this mean that if you take the ACT then you don't need to take any SAT II's????

Just to check, I went to Brown's website and it sure looks like you only need to take SAT II's if you only take the SAT BUT if you take the ACT w/writing, then that is ALL you need. Is that right????

You will really have to read the admission requirements as they vary from school to school.

Some will accept the SAT I ands 2 to 3 SAT IIs while some schools will take ACT with writing an not require SAT IIs and still other schools will require 2 SAT IIs in addition to the SAT or ACT.

example:

Harvard- For the Class of 2011, students may submit either the "old" SAT I or ACT taken before March 2005, or the new SAT or ACT (which must include the writing section). Students must also submit three SAT II exams of their choosing. The Admissions Committee will continue to consider all test results in light of students' educational opportunities.

Yale- As a quick reference, Yale currently requires either the SAT I examination (with the new Writing component) plus any three of the SAT II subject examinations. In substitution for the SAT I and/or the SAT II, Yale will also accept the ACT examination (with the new Writing component).

http://www.yale.edu/admit/quick/index.html

Columbia- SAT or ACT scores, two SAT Subject Test scores

Dartmouth-All applicants to Dartmouth, including those who apply from foreign countries, are required to take the following:

Either the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT I) or the examination of the American College Testing Program (ACT).

Please Note: Students may submit scores from either the old SAT I or the new SAT I (with writing). Similarly, students may submit scores from either the regular ACT (if taken prior to February 2005) or from the ACT with writing (if taken in February 2005 or after).
Any two SAT II Subject Tests.

http://www.dartmouth.edu/apply/admissions/testing.html

Brown- SAT Reasoning Test and SAT Subject Tests; ACT
Brown requires every applicant for admission to Brown in 2005-2006 to submit results of*** either*** the SAT Reasoning Test and any two SAT Subject Tests (except for the SAT Writing Test), or the ACT taken with the Writing Test option.

http://www.brown.edu/Administration/Admission/applyingtobrown/abouttheapplication.html

Penn does not require a math subject test unless you are applying for admission to their engineering school or to Wharton.

http://www.admissionsug.upenn.edu/applying/testing.php

They require the SAT with writing and any two subject tests. A language subject test is recommended on the website, however, admissions will tell you that is meant for placement, not for admission and that you can take it after an acceptance. They will look at your two highest subject test scores if you have taken more than two. In lieu of all that you may take the ACT with writing.
