Question

I've heard that someone's ECs should lead up to and show a passion for someone's intended major; what kind of ECs should an Economics major have? There don't seem to be too many options, other than simply math awards

I don't think there's any rigid format or expectation that people can follow for ECs. I guess just any economics-related activities...and you can write about your enthusiasm for economics in your essay.

EC don't need to show a passion for an "intended major". They should just show a passion for something. Most sports enthusiasts, musicians, actors, dancers, artists, etc. aren't going to "major" in any of those, but they do show a passion. Also, colleges know that majors change frequently once you're in school. Don't feel you have to lock yourself into anything.

You should join a symphonic band. Nah I dunno, maybe do a little freelancing. That would look good.

People are right that your EC needn't match what you think you'll major in. Heck, colleges know that most students change their majors at least twice, anyway.

Just pursue a couple of ECs that you have genuine interest in, and pursue those ECs with creativity, responsibility and leadership. Just being a member of an organization or showing up at meetings is not anything that will teach you about yourself, hone your skills, or provide you with anything that will impress colleges, which like attracting students with the skills and interests to support campus organizations.
