question

is jhu considered a smaller more focused university or a "larger" university

It's kind of both. While it's considered a major research university, size-wise there are just 4,500 undergraduates. It fills a niche in the university community for sure.

I'm curious why you ask this question? WealthOfInformation provided a great answer, but I am interested if there was a specific characteristic you are looking for that will help you make decisions about where to apply.

Hopkins is one the smallest national research institutions and that is a defining quality of the school. At the same time, Hopkins is a large institution with many resources and divisions which our undergraduates will benefit from. So we are small and big at the same time -- and that is truly unique.
