Question !!

How many supplemental recommendations can an applicant turn in?

Because I want to turn in one from my Creative Writing teacher (since I'm not sure that that counts as one from an English/Social Studies) and also one from my Spanish teacher, but I'm not sure if that's allowed.

Thank you in advance !

I don't think there's any limit, but I would generally advise against sending in more than one supplemental recommendation.

Are your CW teacher and Spanish teacher going to say things about you that are mindblowingly fantastic, or are they just teachers you like a little bit more than your English/History and your Math/Science? If you have lots of creative writing and Spanish achievements, I'd suggest sending the supplementals in, but otherwise I'd say no. Supplementals generally don't help your app.

recs are a matter of quality, not quantity! No supplemental recs will make up for crappy primary ones. And sending in too many recs can backfire - the adcoms may wonder what's up...

I've had my CW teacher for a year and was always on top of things in her class and have written great things that she swears she loves. She was also my National Honors Society adviser; so, I'm sure she would be able to write an amazing recommendation just based on those two things alone.

My Spanish teacher, I've had for three years. And I think she truly values me as a student. I was number one in her class last year and she always commenting me on how intelligent I was. But in a class full of fools, it wasn't that hard to see, I suppose. (ie: some guys in my class made a spanish video where they were wearing barely any clothes while pretending to be Montel and Oprah)

I wasn't so sure if I was able to send a lot in. But looking back, 4 does seem like a lot for recs. But I believe I should have them, simply because I know my math/science one may not be so great, simply because math and science just wasn't my thing to begin with. The English/Social Studies one should be pretty good, only because I thought my English teacher was god - he was amazing. But is it really going to look shady if I decide to send in 4 recs?

austriaTree, if you want to do it, go ahead. Personally, I don't think it matters much, as your record speaks for itself. But who knows, it could help.

Just don't make a game out of the process. Too many applicants focus on marginal things, like showing interest by bugging faculty, paper vs electonic apps and so forth, rather than writing a good essay, making sure the required recs are good and on time, and getting good SAT scores.

Keep in mind that an A in a course can tell the adcoms about as much as a good rec anyway. So if the rec just says you were a good student, what additional information is there? So just use good judgement!

And good luck!
