Question?

okay question! should I try and apply for West Point and the Air force so that if i don't get one i might get the other or should i just go for West Point hoping?

Easy answer will you be happy if you don't apply to AFA and don't get into USMA? What would you do then?

You have nothing to lose by applying to both. Alot of kids apply to more than one academy. Spend the next couple of months learning about both USMA and USAFA and the two different services - Army and Air Force.

Some congressional districts are more competitive for one academy than another so you may have a better chance at getting a nomination at one than another - it just depends on how your congressmen and senators handle their nominations.

Don't forget to apply for ROTC scholarship(s) - these are great backup plans if you don't get an academy.
If you find that you no longer desire to attend either academy you can just withdraw your application.
Go for it!

Okay! Actually I would be really happy in either I'm just not so sure on once I graduate is there a way that if i graduated from AFA and couldn't find a job to go to the Army?

If you graduate from the AFA you will have a job. You will be commissioned a 2nd Lt in the Air Force and will be required to serve 5 years active duty.

JAM is right...you will have a job, it might not be what you want, but the AF will give you a position.

You need to sit down and ask how do I want to serve in the military. If you want infantry than the Army is the place. If you want to fly figheter jets than it the AF. If you want intel than it could be either.

We have known several Navy guys who after their committment was up that signed on with the AF. You will be required to finish your committment from whichever branch you are commissioned in. Just realize it is a long time you are giving (4 yrs at the SA, 5 yrs AD and then 3 reserves + any additional committment you incur for training...UPT is 8 yrs, getting a masters is 3, PCS is 3) I would make sure that my heart, soul and everything in between is in it for a long haul...remember the 1st chance you get to bolt is when you are @ 27...to many 18 yr olds, the thought of 27 is something they can't comprehend

Best of luck. Either way you choose, thanks for being willing to serve

Well, to me I would love infantry but I'm unfortunatly a women and can't! I know I want in the military and I know I want to go to an academy but I just don't know what job I would have! I just want where women aren't allowed!

Well, you never know...remember only 30 some odd yrs ago the AFA allowed women...only less than 20 yrs ago the AF allowed women in fighters...you could be one of the pioneers. Also think about a bigger pic. You can be a great asset as an Intel officer (I state this b/c you didn't imply you want to fly) and will allow you the chance to become closer to combat action.

Bullet has done several jt assignments with the Army...jumped with the 82nd, went to CGSC as an O-4, jt assignment at the Pentagon. I have the absolute utmost respect for every person in the Army, you need to understand that an SA education comes with a very high price...5 yrs of AD. My suggestion and throw it in the circular filing cabinet after you read it. Ask yourself how will you feel for the 5 yrs after commissioning...will you spend that time questioning if you made the right decision. If so, than I suggest that you think about going a ROTC scholarship route with a great Army det. VMI, Citadel and Texas A & M quickly come to mind.

Best of luck...you will do great, just for the fact that you are being open and honest at such a young age. Now go and practice the CFA

Well actually I want to fly I'm working on ground school right now but I don't want to fly in the armed forces I want to do ground work! And I want to get into a service Academy and I want to fufill the price after wards! and if i have to I'll go to ROTC! Because I want in in any way but I just really want a job in combat and doing fighting!

I think you may be able to do artillery, engineer, medic work, and other front line aid jobs. I'm not sure at all about this, but it doesn't seem like they wouldn't allow you to do it because it isn't up on the front lines technically speaking.

Well what artillery work would I be allowed to do?

I can only speak to the Army. The "front line" isn't solid anymore. It changes constantly. There are women who branch Military Intelligence going out into Iraqi cities on patrols to gather intelligence.

I believe that women are not allowed to branch infantry, armor, cannon field artillery or shortrange air defense artillery (per NewsHour Extra: Editorial Page -- Women in Combat: Women Join the Men in the Fight for Freedom)

But that leaves plenty of other opportunities for women to serve - even flying and ground crews. Google Army branches and see what your options are.

You need to ask yourself several questions...will I be happy in X branch? What is my goal, besides being commissioned (Intel, flying, engineer...remember there is no job that is"combat" all of them have the ability, but none of them guarantees combat ...regardless of sex.)

Stop and ask yourself what is the professional career you desire as an officer, that should guide you from there you should look at the branch that fits you.

Does anyone know what most female officers that come from West point pick for there job?

I believe I got these numbers for the class of 2008 during branchin -in the fall?...they had 980 then, graduated 972, hope this helps

Didnf format well.. it is branch, total, #male, # female, % of the 980, % female

difference between 980 and 972 - they had a few that need to go to summer school before they get their diplomas. Once they pass their requirements they will get their diplomas and get commissioned.
