Hey everyone. i was just wondering what the best business school you think I can 1) get into for sure 2) have a good chance at admission 3) be competitive at admission ( for those OOS ones and low acceptance rate ones) Thanks everyone! Oh, and I think I want to do international business or finance. Here are my stats.

Male Hispanic on the West coast. Not first generation college student. No financial aid. Thanks everyone!

What do you want to major in?

I’d say you should get into UT-McCombs and Michigan LSA (you can then apply to Ross later) and probably Cornell also. Some reaches you should try are Berkeley Haas, Wharton, a couple of other ivies. UNC and UVA should be attainable as well, as well as UCLA (although they don’t have business majors aside from “biz econ”) and USC.

A 31 ACT with that gpa and the fact that he’s a minority will give him a chance at almost any place. I would consider the major first. If pure business I would go with the big boys.

I did not see the minority status. Well, especially with that, at the absolute minimum YOU WILL get into Cornell and all those schools I mentioned. I don’t want to say that you’ll get into Wharton because for that stuff, it’s more of a toss up, but I’d say definitely apply to UMich, UT (unless it’s too big for you), USC, Cornell, and either UNC or UVA (or both). Those should be a very attainable match for you. Other than that, apply to UO (I’m from OR too btw) as an extreme safety and since their accounting is solid, and then apply to whatever reaches you want. I’d say Wharton, Northwestern or UChicago, Berkeley-Haas and then maybe a few out of HYPS should be a solid list.

Okay! Thanks guys. Yes, I am Hispanic.
I mentioned my intended major above, but i’ll just say it again: either finance or international business.

Those schools you guys mentioned are really good. I mean, you really think I can get into Cornell that easy? Wow! USC, UNC, UVA and all of those sound good. I will apply to Oregon, i’m from Eugene. Haha. But I think I’m going to do Wharton Early Decision, maybe I get lucky. Which out of the HYPS do you think I’ll fit in the best at?

Sorry, missed the majors.

I say you should always shot high, because even if you miss you will still go far. You have good numbers, I would definitely play the odds. Live with no regrets.

For HYPS, it’s all a crap-shoot, really. I’d say Stanford is probably the best fit since I bet they’d appreciate minority status and whatnot more than the others, but Stanford is really, really weird. A friend of my friend got a full scholarship to Duke, but didn’t even get into Stanford, while a couple of people who were obviously good, but not really “Stanford” material got in. So I’d say give that one a shot.

As far as Cornell, I’d be really surprised if you didn’t get in, but I take back you being a shoe-in because in case something doesn’t work out, I don’t want you to be disappointed. I really do think though that Cornell will be quite attainable for you. I was less qualified than you, not a URM and got waitlisted there, so I’m pretty confident about your chances. The key to Cornell, I think, is to really focus on your “why x major/or school” essay. I’m an idiot, but because I worked really hard on that essay and asked my teacher to right about why I’m interested in that major, etc., I think that really gave me a shot when I should have had no business applying there. So just do well on that, and you should get in.

Okay. I’ll probably do ED Wharton
and then RD,
Cornell
USC
Santa Clara ( i promised my aunt I would)
Michigan
and i dunno what else. haha :)

What was your math score on the ACT? Did you take the math SATII? Wharton is one of the few schools that doesn’t do a lot of bending for minorities. If you don’t have a strong math track record, it will be tough.

Why business undergrad (I ask as a Wharton grad)? I might use my ED at one of the top ivies in your shoes. Princeton has great IR and you can get any job from there you can from Wharton.

My ACT math was okay. Now i’m get around a 32 on practice tests. But I’m pretty sure i’ll get a 700+ on my SAT 2 math, and i’m taking calc at the university of oregon this year.

And why business? I’ve always liked it. I have really grown up knowing I’ve wanted to do business. So to do that, i’ve tried to learn as many languages as I could and am learning a lot about international relations and a lot about their cultures.

And why Penn? (i’m answering this because you’re a wharton grad) It’s because when I visited it, I could not have been happier. I loved the campus, I loved the people, the courses sounded both interesting and challenging and i’m really into the ideas of the Huntsman program. I am really interested in Wharton too.

And princeton. I don’t really think I could get into Princeton to be honest. It just seems too competitve, and i feel like i wouldn’t really be seen as a great applicant for them.

How many schools are you willing to apply to? Aside from those, I’d add Stanford, UO, UW, and the UCs (I think UCs are all on the same app). If you’re looking for more east coast, then apply to Sloan at MIT instead of Stanford, Carnegie Mellon-Tepper, NYU-Stern, and UVA/UNC instead of the UCs. Actually, apply to stern no matter what.

It all depends on what environment you want though in the end.

Yes! I forgot NYU. I will definently apply there.
But here’s the thing, in all honesty, I really don’t think i can get into Princeton, MIT, HY. The reason I feel like I could get into Penn is because in the “what’s a perfect applicant” I am all those things. That’s the only reason why. I don’t have amazing numbers ( SAT, whatever) so I don’t think they’d like that at all.

Apply to Stern as well. You seem pretty gifted. You should apply directly to the business school at Michigan (Ross) and you may gain preferred admission. It will make freshman year ALOT less hectic. Good Luck!

I think you’ll get into Princeton before Wharton if you only have a 700 mathII and 32 math ACT. You need really strong math skills for Wharton and they are careful not to accept those who don’t have them. If you love Penn I’d apply to Huntsman with arts and science instead of Wharton as your second choice. Also, for Huntsman, do not try to use your native language as your target language.

Oh… when I went to the Huntsman… place… and talked to the director of the program, she said spanish would be fine. And then the kids who I talked to were all internationals who used their home language for their target language.
You really think I’d get into Princeton? That’s really nice.
But I am still going to stick with Huntsman ED with Wharton as my second choice. Hopefully I get into one of them so that I don’t have to deal with RD decisions and I’m super happy with my school.

Thank you everyone who contributed! :)
