Questioni with Housing

How exactly does housing work, meaning Room and Board? Is it complete random or do you get to choose which room you want to be in. I understand that 95% of the rooms are doubles, and I am all fine with that but I do not want is a triple or a suite. Can anyone clarify this for me?

blue, Just call housing to be sure. We started to look at dorms during "Choices", but we quickly were told that you cannot request your dorm as an incoming freshman. I don't know with 100% accuracy if this is true. My son did not request and got a great room. It does seem to be random. Also, not all dorms have A/C, and you can request the substance free dorm as an option (I am fairly sure that it has A/C). My son decided against requesting Bell, the substance free dorm, last year. I had heard that one dorm will be renovated next year, so housing was running a little bit short for next year's sophomores. I hope that it won't cause tripling, I doubt it, but I would ask. I forgot which dorm will be renovated, so unfortunately I cannot tell you which one.

Congratulations on your decision to go to JMU.

Hi Blue, I'm a freshman here, almost going to be a sophmore in a few weeks!!
As far as housing goes, most of the rooms are doubles but there are some triples and singles as well. I'm in a double this year but there are some triples down the hall which are not too bad. There's alot more room and you have a chance to bond with two roommates rather than just one. But I can't lie, I love having a double.

As far as choosing dorms, you will get assigned a room but you can request a roommate if you know who you want to room with. There are some options, like northeastmom said with the substance free dorm. Also I was in the learning community dorm. A learning community is basically where you have a class with some of the people you're living with. I know from experience makes it easier to make friends and definitely do work since your classmates are down the hall. The best part about this is you get to live in Gifford, a dorm close to the quad that has a/c and is more like a hotel than any of the other freshman dorms I've seen. It's definitely something I was glad to hear about before I came to JMU.

I hope this helped!!
