Questions about AP Studio Art

I need to take a Fine Art for high school and I don't want to take a regular class, so I am thinking of AP Studio Art. Can you take the class without any other art classes? Is it difficult if you are not good at art?

It depends on your school. For my school we had to show the teacher a sampel of ou rpreviosu artwork, so we had to have some experience int he arts. We dont have to take a school art class, but we do need some level in art skill.

Our teacher needs for us to sign off on it if we want to take it, and we usually have her do that by either a) having her for a prior art class or b) showing her some of our artwork. There aren't really any prerequisites per se, though, but I'm sure it varies by school.

You have to be pretty good to get a 5, though if you're mediocre (like me!) you can skim by with a three (which is what I did ;]).

Scroll down a bit and you'll see examples of works for various scores.

Here are a few typical examples of my stuff:

So I've been in an independent art study my senior year. Do you you have to actually be emrolled in an AP Studio Class, or can you just sumbit your work?
Here's my portfolio with pieces completed from 10-12 grade.

I imagine you can submit your work without taking a class (as you can self-study the other APs and show up for the test), but you send off all of your stuff in this big official folder that they give you. Also, you have to send most of your work in as slides, which can be a little annoying to make if you haven't a teacher to make them for you ;D

Ahh, I see. I'm pretty sure the one teacher who knew how to make slides retired last year.
Also, does the work have to be all 2D? No sculptures?

Wow, I am not very good at drawing at all... if those are threes than I am at a -2 lol. I have 3 years to improve my artwork. But how do 5's look?

Is AP Art History considered a fine art? I heard it is easier.

Nope, there are other studio art classes -- three total, in fact: Drawing, 2-D Design, and 3-D Design. 2D is just drawing but with photoshop stuff and photos -- anything, so long as it's 2d. 3d is pretty self explanatory, and I don't think you can mix and match -- it has to be all 2d or all 3d.

You may be able to get the slides done at kinkos or somewhere, though I hear it's pretty expensive.

You can see example 5s on the 1st link I gave. Keep in mind, though, that given the extra-subjective nature of esthetics, people with amazing artwork can do poorly, and people with crappy artwork can do well. There were a few people in my class who far, far surpassed me in their drawing ability, and they got 3s also. (in fact, I can't remember anybody who has gotten above a three, which is quite funny, because some people I know make hundreds from selling their stuff, lolol)

@ Moodrest: Wow! your artwork is really realistic, especially the first one of the man. i really like it! :]

@brianm02: did you win a scholastic art award for the mask? I remember seeing it on another thread. It really creative, its made of shredded paper right? I hope you get a gold award!

How much do you draw in AP Art History?

einnob, I recieved a gold key for it, and yes it made of cardboard and covered in shredded paper. Thanks for the compliment.
My shoe, which is also on flickr, won an American Vision Award Nominee. I really wish my lion would have though. I guess I can't whine though.

You don't have to draw at all in AP Art History, but I think most schools consider it more of an elective history. If you love art though, it's a good class to take. I take it and I love it.
I think AP Music Theory would be considered a fine art.

Thanks for the info.

Heh, at my school, Art History is a Fine Art, which works great for me. :D

AP art is incredibly difficult to complete in one year. it took me two (although i did most of it junior year). im incredibly proud of my 5 though!!!

The class itself varies from school to school, but for the AP exam, yes, good drawing skills are highly advantageous.

2D Design is actually a lot like Drawing. If you look through the CB examples, many pieces seem interchangeable. Graders judge different criteria though.

You can submit your pieces digitally this year, so no need for slides. The only exception is the Quality section, which still requires artwork to be physically sent to CB.
