Questions about App for internationals

Hey, I noticed that there isn't a section for internationals to show their ability to pay. Does anyone have any idea on this? I thought most US schools will require us to show at least to be able to afford 1 year?

I e-mailed the admin department last week, I still haven't gotten any replies. >_>

You don't really have to bother about showing them your ability to pay until you are accepted. Theres a section where you can tell them how much you are willing to pay a year, and thats it. You will need to show the US embassy your ability to pay or they will not grant you a visa.

You won't be able to find this information on the application because acceptance is need blind. You would provide this information later, after you have been accepted. They send you information about paying tuition later.

There's a spot on the signature page of Form 1 (page 6 of the application PDF) concerning this:

International Students ONLY - Required

(International students are neither U.S. citizens nor permanent residents of the United States.)

I will have approximately $________ (U.S. dollars) available for educational and living expenses each of the years that I will attend Stanford University. (The approximate cost for one academic year at Stanford is currently $49,000 -- excluding travel. You can expect an increase annually.)

I understand that if I check the second box, I will not be eligible to apply for financial aid at any time during my undergraduate years at Stanford.

__ I will apply for financial aid at Stanford
__ I will not apply for financial aid at Stanford

Admissions for internationals is NOT need-blind. If you apply for financial aid your chances will drastically decrease. See the FAQ:

"Stanford has a limited amount of financial aid for international students (students who are neither U.S. Citizens nor U.S. Permanent Residents), and the need for aid will be a major factor in your admission decision. You must indicate on the Basic Information Form of the Application for Admission whether or not you intend to apply for financial aid and also must indicate how much money you have available per year for your educational and living expenses."

Thanks! I saw the part.

So basically, showing ability to pay is only when applying for visa right?

What if you already have a visa (just not permanent residency)? Do you still need to demonstrate ability to pay?
