I'm confused about something.. but it should be a fairly easy question for people who actually know how CMU's application process works.

So it says CMU's RD for Fine Arts is by Dec. 1.
and RD for everything else is Jan. 1

If that's the case, how do you apply to both at the same time for BCSA?
Or is it something you just have to apply at different times and see if you get into both?
Does that mean I have to apply twice...?

I'm confused.
Sorry, this sounds like a noobish question.

And one more; say I was rejected through ED to CS. then through RD i was accepted to Fine Arts. Will I be able to transfer later in the year despite rejection in the past?

You would probably submit your final application (including everything for CS) by December 1st. There isn’t any explanation on the site and I never got a question like that when I was working in undergrad admissions so I have no idea for sure. However, that seems like the most logical, since you can only submit your application once.

I went to look at the web page because the OPs question seems to indicate that the fine arts application program has changed in terms of deadlines. It has. Last year there was no possibility of ED for Fine Arts students but this year, apparently, CFA students can apply ED. Last year there may have been an earlier deadline than RD for the other schools but I don’t remember that. I do remember that it was essential to get the application finished in in order to sign up for a portfolio review. I looked at the 2011 requirements and that is still true. If you are able to do a personal interview/portfolio review try and do it during a sleeping bag weekend so you can spend an overnight at CMU. They have a lot of slots for portfolio reviews but they do fill up. My S found the review enjoyable and informative…get a sense of how you might fit in with CFA at CMU and he went during a diversity/sleeping bag weekend and had a great time.

So Kate is right…submit the common and the supplement by the fine arts deadline. In the application you indicate which schools you are applying to and if you are interested in a joint program. So one application, but if you have CFA as one of your choices you must submit a portfolio live or online. If you submit saying you are interested in three schools you will get three admissions decisions. If you submit to two and want to be considered for the joint program you will get three admission results–you must be accepted into both individual schools to be considered for the joint program. I know this is how it worked for my S …he submitted one application for more than one CMU college.
