I'm a HS senior and I'm interested in applying for an Army ROTC scholarship. I'm a little confused about the application process. I am supposed to list up to seven schools that I would like to consider me for a scholarship. Does this mean that applying for an AROTC scholarship at these schools will help me be accepted to them? I'm curious about this because I intend to apply for ROTC schoalrships at some of my reach schools. Also, if I am awarded a scholarship and have a change of heart and decide to not take the scholarship, am I still required to serve?

And does anyone know if you will able to choose your commisson when you graduate from ROTC? I am interested in becoming an armor officer, intelligence officer, or an aviation officer (if I am able to get corrective eye surgery such as LASEK or LASIK). Will choosing a certain major help get you into a certain commission?

Applying through Army ROTC will not help you at those schools. You still have to be accepted on your own merits.

If you decide not to take the scholarship you do not have to serve. I don’t know what your ability is to select your choice of fields, but I doubt the Army will allow much of that - maybe a general field. That’s the trade off with the Army vs. the Air Force, assured field or not vs. longer pay back.

Concerning your interest in aviation and LASIK- be sure to check with the Army medical people to see the regulations regarding eye surgery. The Air Force will only approve the procedure if done by their own surgeons- I don’t know if the same policy applies to the Army.

Yeah, I plan on bringing that up when I go to my interview. I know for sure that I won’t have it done until I’m a few years into college because they need to make sure that my eyesight doesn’t change.
