I'm applying to Northwestern for fall 2009, and I want to major in journalism. Clearly I'm supposed to apply to the Medill School of Journalism...but I want to do a double major in either economics or physics also. Is that possible?

Also, is getting into the Medill School harder than getting into the Weinberg College? What is the admission rate?

Yes, you can double major between Medill & Weinberg.

Yes, Medill is the most competitive school to get into at NU I believe. Mostly because it focuses more on journalism experience and interest in journalism than a simply good all-around application.

If you don't acquire a double major while in Medill, you can choose a concentration based on a major in Weinberg. I know plenty of Journalism majors who choose a concentration in sociology, political science, area studies, etc.

Not quite sure where you heard that from. I personally know 3 people that transferred from WCAS to Medill, and I don't know anyone that applied that was turned down -- not to say that everyone's transfer is approved.

I honestly don't know where anyone would get the idea that it is "near impossible" to transfer into Medill. Of course it's fairly difficult and proven interested must be shown, but it's not impossible in the least.

It is recommended that you apply to the school you are most interested, particularly if you are interested in Medill, the Theatre program, and the School of Music. While not impossible it is more difficult to transfer into these schools--Medill and Theatre because there are a set number of spots so you wait for someone to drop before you can transfer, and Music due to the audition process. That said, I know people who have done all three.
