Questions about Beloit

I’m deciding between Beloit and another college, and one of the reasons why I’m not 100% sure that I want to go to Beloit is its location - frankly, is there anything fun to do in town? how easy is it to get around to bigger cities nearby? is there much stuff to do on campus to keep you from being bored? also, what is the campus housing like? what dorms do people prefer? I’d really appreciate any input anyone has to offer :)

Yeah, to be honest, the town really sucks, especially if you don’t have a car. They do have trips to Madison (and to Chicago if you stay over fall or spring break) that are free. They do trips to the movie theater every few weeks, and I think you can get free or discounted tickets from ResLife.

As much as it can feel sort of depressing knowing that you can’t really go out anywhere at night, I haven’t really found it to be a problem. There are documentaries showing pretty much every week, on some weekends the college shows regular movies (they did Sherlock Holmes 2011 on the last big prospie weekend, actually). If you’re working and in a couple of clubs, you probably won’t be itching to get off campus. And there’s always parties on the weekends. The only time it really annoys me is when I want food late at night because pretty much all the restaurants within walking distance are closed by eight, and Walgreens closes at ten every night. I guess there are delivery places open later, though. Plus food service should be changing next year to have later hours.

I’m a recent alum (2008) and this thread just happened to pop up in my email. I can’t speak for Beloit today, but I do know that the town being relatively boring wasn’t a problem when I was there. There was a lot of free acts that the school brought in, and between that and club-sponsored activities and parties, you hardly ever really needed to go off-campus for entertainment. You’ll most likely have friends with cars, and there are places within a short drive that are open late for food. You’re also really centrally located to many cities. Rockford is a half hour away and has some good things going for it, Madison and Milwaukee are both about an hour away, and Chicago is about 90 miles away. Not saying the place doesn’t have its faults, but lack of things to do wasn’t generally one. I will say it’s not the best place (or at least wasn’t at the time) if you’re looking for a college bar scene.
