Questions about BIO 311C and CMS 306M

BIO 311C:
Will these classes open up at each orientation? Because right now ALL TWO PAGES of BIO 311C classes are close. (except for the restricted ones which I assume are reserved for bio majors (?)) ALSO, what other classes are good for non-science majors looking to fill core science requirements? I'm most interested in life science like bio or enviornmental science. :)

CMS 306M (Professional Communication Skills):
I've seen this class listed under "Basic Education Requirements" (NOT Lower or Upper Division Business Core) under all the sample Business major degree plans, but NOT under the COLA degree plans. So is this class a part of the business core and NOT the university core or the COLA core? As a prospective transfer to McCombs, should I take this class my freshman year? (It is not listed with the other indicator classes like Calc and Econ on the internal transfer information.)

Here are some of the documents I was looking at:

Thanks CC! I've tried looking for the answers on my own but I'm still a little confused. I hope my rambling was not too convoluted. :)

I had CMS 306M with Green this past spring semester. He’s a phenomenal professor! The class is very engaging and there’s not a lot of lecture. All business and communications majors need to take it, I don’t think it really matters if the course schedule says it’s for the business one or not. But anyone of any major can take it. You have to do persuasive, informational, group, and impromptu speeches in front of the class (powerpoints as well) and write self evaluations over each. There are 2 multiple choice/essay tests based on the workbook. 2 extra credit opportunities for a total of 4 points. Grading is based on a point system out of 300. The range of points to get a B is really broad-- it’s very easy to make a B but miss an A by a few points. The curriculum and grading scheme is standardized across the course so each professor covers the same material. It’s an interesting class and most people seem to really like their professor because the class is very open to discussion and ideas. If you’re a prospective business major, then definitely take it. It’s a great elective class to take even if you’re not in business.

BIO 311C is always completely closed the day before registration. They open it up the day of. It’s mostly for science majors and anyone on the pre-med track. If you’re not one of those, don’t take it. Science majors’ biology (311C, 311D, etc.) and other science courses are not the same as non-science major’s science classes; they are significantly more work for obvious reasons. I know that BIO 301D is for non-science majors so maybe try that one. The course schedule has descriptions of each class so it should say if it’s for non-science majors.

Yeah I realized later yesterday that BIO311C was for science majors so I definitely wont be taking that class now. All the section for BIO 301D are closed but I noticed BIO 301M is also a non science major course and it has a lot of sections open so I might end up taking that. Lol I wish I could do a search for “non science major’s science” on the registrar. Thanks for your help!

Odyssey212, I’m pretty sure that you don’t have to be a biology major to take Bio311C because if that were true, only biology majors could follow the “pre-med” track. The course description only says “for science majors” because it’s a required course for science majors. If you care, many high ranking grad schools say that they prefer that you take courses that people majoring in that area take instead of “non major courses”.

Anyone of any major can take BIO 311C. All pre-med and science majors must take it. You don’t have to be a science major to be pre-med (I know people in business and fine arts who are pre-med) I just mean that it’s going to require more work so if you don’t necessarily have to take that specific bio class to meet core reqs, then don’t. You most certainly can if you want to though.
