In my opinion, Blair has the most strikingly beautiful campus of any school in the Northeast. Some of its facilities, like the gym, are subpar, but the new buildings - the arts center and Annie Hall (girls' dorm) - are fantastic. I believe Blair's average SSAT scores are in the low 60's. All three schools you mentioned are similar academically.

As of a few years ago, the median SSAT for Pomfret was 68 and St. Marks was 70. They may have gone up or down by a few points but they usually don't move too much.

Avg SAT for Pomfret: 1175
Avg SAT for St Marks: 1270

We visited St Marks and really liked it. Small school that gives a lot of personal attention.

My son started at Blair this year, so I can answer some questions about it. We did not visit Pomfret and St. Mark's School so I'm no help there.

Blair's average SSAT score is 65% according to boardingschoolreview. My impression is that they have a range of academic abilities from very high to above average (a 50% SSAT is still above average compared to national norms). According to their website, they do look at SSAT scores, but also pride themselves in looking at the whole applicant. I think they want students who are determined to do their best and take advantage of the offerings at Blair.

According to my son, the students are very nice. My impression of them is positive. I know that twice when we've needed help bringing things up to his dorm room, there were many helpful volunteers.

The Blair campus is quite stunning, and it feels larger than most schools its size. Take look at the campus on www.blair.edu . They just acquired an additional 120 acres.

My impression is that academics are very important, and they offer a great selection of courses for a school their size. At the same time, there is time for fun and friendship. It is not a pressure cooker. Faculty is supportive without handholding. My impression is that Blair is a great school for serious athletes. A good number of their students get recruited by colleges. However, you don't have to be a great athlete to attend and enjoy your time there. Most sports have at least 2 levels. They have excellent offerings in the arts and an outstanding video production class.

On your previous post, you asked about dress code. Blair has a casual dress code, but there are restriction about what you can wear. Also, 2 - 4 times a week they have formal dinners which require a coat & tie for boys and something a little dressy for girls.

As to whether or not it is the right school for you, only you can judge that. If you think it would be a good fit, you should visit.

thanks for all the help

My son is a Blair alum, and I would be glad to answer any questions. It is an awesome school. Kids from his graduating class are attending most of the Ivies, most of the top LACS, and also state schools and less selective LACS. There is a real focus on finding the right college "fit" for each student and not just aiming for prestige. The Blair faculty (most live on campus) is always available and their doors are seldom locked. They have kids over for dinner and for informal chat sessions all the time. There are lots of weekend trips to NYC, the Poconos etc. The academics are rigorous, but the students are NOT all super stars. I can't say enough about the excellence of the faculty. I have familiarity with a LOT of prep schools and have done a lot of research, and I can honestly say that the Blair headmaster is one of the tops in the country. He led the school through a very difficult and tragic situation last year (the injury and death of a football captain) with poise and compassion. The community has high moral values, but recognizes that kids are kids and makes allowances for slip-ups.

We visited Pomfret a couple weeks ago and it is one of my daughter's top two choices. There were a lot of things that clicked for us. Academics seems strong, beautiful campus, great hockey team (my daughter's sport), etc. We liked the small campus. Dress code and sit-down dinners were a little stricter/more formal than some of the other campuses we visited, but interestingly enough it didn't feel stuffy or preppy. In fact there were other campuses with looser dress codes that felt more preppy/formal. With respect to your SSAT question, the admissions rep told us average was 70-75 area, although there was a fairly broad range around that.
