Questions about BU?

Hey everyone…
I’m starting to finalize my list of colleges and I was wondering if any of the current students could answer the following questions??

How is the intramural program? Do a lot of kids participate?

How would you rate the campus beauty?

On the scale of 1-10 how would you rate your teachers, as in availability and such?

How do you like the city of Boston?

1-10 party school…one being dry 10 being absolutly crazy

How is the student body support toward sports teams?
7 Your overall expierence so far? 1-10

I'm no longer a student, but I'm sure my answers will be just as helpful.

How is the intramural program? Do a lot of kids participate?
Varies per sport--some are actually a bit competitive. A lot of kids do do intramurals and there are a lot of different teams to play on (from hockey to broomball).

How would you rate the campus beauty?

It's not a traditional campus, and if you try to view it as such, you're not going to think much of it. I was very happy with the campus--I loved my view of the city from Warren Towers and I loved living on the Charles when I was on Bay State Road. Having the T go by my front door was a big help to me and I enjoyed being in the city. There are some beautiful parts to the campus--you just have to know where to look. The vast majority of the people who say the campus is ugly have never walked the Charles at night before.

On the scale of 1-10 how would you rate your teachers, as in availability and such?

Well, it varies from teacher to teacher and department to department, but all of my teachers were available if I needed it (although I usually didn't--I'm not one to go to office hours or request extra help). Most were excellent.

How do you like the city of Boston?

I liked it enough to move here after graduation.

1-10 party school....one being dry 10 being absolutly crazy

The big advantage to BU is that BU can be what you want it to be--if you want to party like crazy, you can go to all the parties, bars and nightclubs you want. If you don't and want to be dry, you can be as far removed from those things as you want to be.

How is the student body support toward sports teams?

Similar to #5, if you want to be big on sports, you'll find more than enough people who will do it with you. The vast majority of students are big Red Sox supporters or Yankee fans and hockey has a huge following. Sports do not, however, dominate life as it does at other schools.

7 Your overall expierence so far? 1-10

8?

Yo Ryan, I always wondered this--Do a lot of students go to Hockey Games? One of the things i'm really looking forward to is College Hockey Season.

What are the most competitive intramurals btw?

Hockey is the most well-attended sport. Hockey is extremely popular.

I didn't play any intramurals, so I can't tell you specifics.

Good to know. I was def. gonna get season tix (I think you can?).

Thanks as always

Look into a sports pass (which you get automatically unless you decline it).

Ohh, intramural flag football and broomball are a MUST. The football gets competitive, our team actually had scheduled practices, we ran some cool plays, and got real into it. Broomball, even better, its TONS of fun, the games are intense, I cant even describe how much I cant wait till next semester when it starts. I'd recommend getting together a small group of friends, because if your on a huge team, you get less play time, and the games are already short to begin with. So yeah, def get involved with that.

Can you tell me what floor hockey is?

hocky in the halls i think

It's just hockey on a regular floor (such as inside a gymnasium) and not on ice or the street.

How is the intramural program? Do a lot of kids participate?

i see a fair number of flag football games on Nickerson Field pretty often. i'm not sure about other sports, but it's definitely not a huge thing at BU. most people i know play on their own with pick-up games on a field or at the fitrec, especially for soccer and basketball.

How would you rate the campus beauty?

BU has one of the best-looking urban campuses. it's unfair to expect a beautiful rural campus cuz BU is obviously urban. we have a major street (commonwealth ave) and a convenient subway down the middle of our campus, but we're also not "in the heart of the city." we're right next to lots of grass and the charles river. west campus also has a considerable amount of open space. i think BU has the best of both worlds.

On the scale of 1-10 how would you rate your teachers, as in availability and such?

i've always been able to talk to a teacher if i wanted to. unless they have another class right after mine, i'm always able to talk to them at the end of class. also, they all have required office hours, where i'm guaranteed to find them. talking with them before a test or paper really helps. last, most of them also respond to emails, and some have even let me call their house phone.

How do you like the city of Boston?

good:
- it's THE college town (something like 1/3 of boston residents are undergrad students)
- there's always something going on
- it's the perfect size.. not too small but not too big
- the T (the subway) currently has one of the cheapest fares in the country ($1.25). it'll be raised to $1.70 in 2007 though. it's also very easy to use.
- it's one of the safest cities
- some parts look very beautiful, especially the charles river and some historical buildings
- there's so much history behind so many parts of the city
- it ranks very high for arts and culture
- it's full of smart people
- it's one of the most liberal cities (u can be whoever u want and you'll be accepted here)

bad:
- it's very windy almost year-round, and it gets pretty cold in the winter (it's actually not much colder than the rest of the northeast.. the wind just makes it seem that way)
- most things shut down by 2 am, which is relatively early for a major city
- the T can get annoying and inconsistent

1-10 party ranking

like ryan said, it's whatever u want it to be. if u wanna find crazy parties, you'll find them. if u wanna stay in and work, no one will bother u or think less of u. party days are the standard thursday, friday, and saturday.

How is the student body support toward sports teams?

men's ice hockey has (and deserves) crazy support. the red sox are pretty big here too. for everything else, there's a lot less support.

Your overall experience so far? 1-10

with 10 being best, i'd say 8.

other stuff i find notable about BU:

BU seems to have lots of TAs (teacher assistants) who can't speak english well. they really need to do something about that.

people look good here. we were ranked the 3rd most physically fit college. and a magazine (i think GQ) said the outdoor steps at BU's tsai performance center are the best place in boston to meet beautiful "all-american" girls. but that's not to say you'll be left out if u don't put on nice clothes for class or don't ever go to the gym.. there's definitely lots of kids like that too.

BU's dining hall quality ranks among the best in the country. there's lots of delicious options for off-campus food too. mmm.. food.....

Yeah, the food I had in the dining hall when I visited was quite good. I was pleasently surprised. Good to hear about what GQ said.

I thought BU doesnt have a lot of TAs?

Every school of any size has TA's. Depends on the classes and the school. For example, if you take a large lecture like Intro Ethics, then you have a section and you'll have a TA. The same thing would be true at Harvard.

A "section" ---meaning the main lecture or class would be taught by a full Professor then the class may break into smaller sections for discussions etc. and those smaller classes might be led by a TA. Some students prefer this since they get more than one teacher/approach and the TAs are often young and may at times be better than the Prof. depending on the class.

i'm a freshman & ive been here a month so far. i really like bu. the food at west campus is so good. my classes & profs are good. im doing intramural volleyball which starts next week.

http://fitrec.bu.edu/facilities/fitrec/index.html

Here is a link you'll find helpful. You can do a virtual tour of the brand new state of the art Fit Rec Center, (huge climbing wall, sports rooms, weights, classes, a cafe) which is always busy, and also click on the intramural link. My S is not a jock type yet he and his friends go "fitrecing" several times a week and also participate in pick up basketball. There are a ton of intramurals at all levels and lots of clubs that are sports oriented from karate to snowboarding.
