Questions about BXA intercollege degree program/ETC/animation.. many questions

Hey,

I wasn't sure where to put this thread.. hope this will do.

I'm interested in the BCSA program, except I haven't exactly taken art in high school. So I have a bunch of questions, if anyone would like to/is able to answer...

Is it possible to get accepted into CFA with no handdrawn pieces in your portfolio at all? Does your porfolio have to have a wide range? I've done many things with photoshop and designing on computer, but basically nothing with actual physical stuff.

Is it possible to be accepted into SCS and not CFA, and then apply to CFA in your second year for the intercollege program? What are the chances? Assuming that I take some art courses in my first year (if that's even allowed). Would I still be able to finish in 4 years?

What does ETC focus on, exactly?

Ultimately what I'm interested in is animation or video game modeling, that type of thing. Any.. helpful comments on that perhaps?

Thanks in advance.

I know that transferring is possible. I would suggest contacting the BXA adviser with these questions because they would be able to answer them the best and most reliably: msmurray@andrew.cmu.edu

Hi!

I don’t think I had any handdrawn images in my portfolio–the review committee actually really enjoys unconventional/non-traditional art making that departs from what you might see in a typical high school setting.

Over half the BCSA student have done an internal transfer into the program, and there are ways to make sure you’re following the BCSA curriculum while you’re still only an Art or CS student. However, there are also many other options that might suit you better. The IDEATE program is a brand program that lets you get a concentration or minor in addition to your major, in areas such as video game design and animation, which might be better for you than BCSA. Animation & modeling don’t necessarily need all of what the CS curriculum at CMU requires, and you might find yourself happier just doing IDEATE.

The BXA advisor Stephanie Murray is a fantastic resource, but in your particular case I would recommend contacting Prof. Golan Levin (golan@andrew.cmu.edu), who specifically advises the BCSA students and is a professor of electronic art.

If you have any additional questions, I study CS/Art at CMU and would gladly accept any PMs (:

Thanks for the replies! I think I was quite confused when I first made this thread, way less confused now haha.

I looked at the IDEATE program, and I’m quite interested now. Again, thanks for helping. ^^
