Questions about cadet life

Odd situation... I just received a nomination to the Academy... and I didn't ask for one. I suppose I should just send in my CFA results. Has anyone ever heard of this happening before? I already have my appointment to USNA.

And the nom came from the same MOC who gave me one for USNA.

I got a nomination to the USNA and AFA, despite that I didn't even apply to the USNA. I thought it was cool but ignored it. After all, had I wanted to go there, I would have applied there too, right?

Well I did apply, but I already got my appointment... so I probably won't do anything.

I got a nom to USNA even though I told my congressman I didn't want one and wasn't applying. They were definetly pressuring people to go for them in the interviews though.

Might be what happens when your in the midwest and the most water you see is the pond down the street.

where at in the Midwest? Kansas?

I just realized that I didn't get my ALO information until after I submitted my online application. It came up on the web page that had all my self reported info on it...

Thanks K10! :)

Well, she HAS been to public school--but as the teacher! She helps regularly with teaching CPR classes. I say that she's been homeschooled all the way through--I say that because she's been in parent-directed education all the way through--but that's included 45 hours of college classes. We've found the academies quite willing to look at her on the merits of what she's done. Especially, AFA has been welcoming of homeschoolers. Now, leaving her music and animals behind--THAT will be a big adjustment!

Along those lines--anyone hear of a ongoing string quartet at AFA?

I haven't heard of them, or heard their work, but it is possible that there might be something that is not really well advertised just like the men's accapella group - In the Stairwell.

thanks UNCynical for all the help, my scores:

gender: female
pullups: 2 :(
long jump: i have no earthly idiea....6' maybe? totally lost on that one
sit ups: 65
pushups: 99
600 run: no clue, i dont really have a good length perception on this either
1.5 mile run: 12:40

these numbers are taken from my last CFA & summer seminar (usna) from october & june, respectively

usna_aviationgirl, on the PFT, not counting the 600 yard run, you'd have 212 points. To get to 250, you'd need to do the run in 2:17. The max for pushups for females in 2 minutes is 48 (so there's 100 points right there); all the of the other events you mentioned scored in the upper 30's.
If you run the AFT in 12:40, you'd get 293 points, which would be 2.3 points on the 4 point scale.

I think you would pass the PFT aviationgirl, but I think you would fail the pee test much less get kicked for honor. Steroids are bad for you and so is too much excercise. 99 pushups is ridiculous. The max for guys is 72 and most don't even get 60.

I think that was uncalled for and completely wrong. For one thing, you have no idea who she is. Also, people applying to the academies generally work very hard for their goals and I for one think that she did every single one of those pushups and worked up to that many legitimately. You are way out of line with those accusations.

MonkeySuit, please refrain from such comments on this board. They don't help anything and just cause tension.

As for the number of pushups, 99 is a lot and may end up being lower when they're counted USAFA-style, but that's not up to your judgment right now. While doing pushups with my four degrees in the halls, I've done 75 with them on more than one occasion just to make them realize they are all capable of doing more than they think they can.

Hey, UNcynical... I have a question... what are you planning on doing when you leave the Academy?

Yes, USAFA-style push-ups differ from push-ups most people are used to completing. Make sure your face is up looking in front of you and that your elbows make at least a 90 degree bend (your chest should pretty much be touching the ground)

"Hey, UNcynical... I have a question... what are you planning on doing when you leave the Academy?"

My class already has our jobs, although we don't get our base assignments until mid-February. I'll be going to undergraduate pilot training (UPT) to fly.

Do you HAVE to have your head up in push-ups? I usually have trouble holding it up, very awkward postion.

"Do you HAVE to have your head up in push-ups?"

When you take the PFT, no. However, doing so does improve the "posture" of your pushup and at least gives the illusion of having a better form than not. Just make sure you're breaking 90 degrees and keeping your back straight.
