I'm pretty confused about how signing up for classes works at Notre Dame, and since there's no orientation or anything I figured I'd ask here. I have a bunch of questions, but any information would be really helpful!

When's the day we sign up for classes and what time?

Is there something available beforehand that gives a description of classes and what time they meet?

How exactly do we go about making our schedule? Do we sign up for classes at certain times?

How does it work with AP credit? I have a 5 on psych from last year that I didn't send at the time because I didn't know where I was going. I have my test scores from this year sending to Notre Dame, but I won't know the scores until after I sign up for classes. If I get my scores back and I test out of classes or requirements, how exactly does that work?

Thanks for the help, I'm feeling completely clueless right now.

It’s kind of sad that I don’t remember this even though I went through the process a year ago, but I’ll try my best to help you out!

1) I don’t remember there being a specific day/time to register for classes but there is a deadline that you’ll have to submit the classes you want by. Don’t worry, they’ll give you a decent amount of time to pick classes.
2) You’ll receive something soon, most likely in the form of an email, with a link or something of the like that will bring you to a book-like pdf. That book will pretty much walk you through the process of registering for classes, a brief description of the class, and what classes you should choose from based on your intended major.
3) If they haven’t changed the process at all, you’re going to pick your top 3 choices for different types of classes (math, science, etc.) and then based on what you choose, your advisor will put together your schedule for the fall semester. So, unfortunately, I don’t think you get much say in what time your classes will be.
4) As for AP credit, I think there should be a chart or something (I would double check your acceptance packet) that tells you what score Notre Dame would accredit and which class you would place out of. Once you get your AP scores for this year, check the chart to see if you place out of any classes and send a copy of the scores to your advisor. They should be able to help you readjust your schedule if you place out of any required classes.

Thanks so much, this was so helpful!! Just 2 more questions though…
With my psych score I get out of one psych class, does that count towards a 1st year requirement (so I should send it now?) or should I just not worry about it because I can use it later? Basically, if I take a full schedule freshman year the psych credits still count towards my major and I won’t have to take a class later on?
So Notre Dame isn’t like some other schools where you have to be on the website at the exact time it opens in order to get the classes you want? I know that’s a huge nightmare when the server’s slow because everyone’s on, and classes fill so quickly you sometimes have to rearrange your whole schedule, so I’m looking forward to not having to deal with that! I just want to make sure I’m not missing anything.

caro223: I assume you are an entering freshman. If so, the process for fall registration is different for you than for any other semester. The freshman fall semester classes are scheduled through the First Year of Studies advisor. You’ll get something in the mail soon to list some of your preferences, but the advisor will do the actual scheduling. When you get to campus for orientation (the few days before classes start), you will have a chance to make changes to your schedule.

I think your FYS advisor will have all your AP scores by the time they create your schedule, so they will know what level to place you in. I would send the psych score in now, just to keep things simple.

Also, I think you will take some online placement tests in early June, if needed (foreign language, I don’t know what else…)

And someplace in there, you can find a list of required courses for your intended major. Although you won’t officially declare your major until the spring, if you already have a major in mind, you can find the required courses and recommendations for what to take freshman year. I can’t remember exactly where that is, but I do remember getting there from the FYS site.
