i am an incoming freshman this fall.
some classes require to register for discussion/lab sections(ex. Calculus). what do we do in those discussion sections?
also, how hard is their Principles of Composition class? is this class basically just wrtiting essays/papers?
thanks

No idea about the composition question, but the discussion sections generally have 10 to 20 kids depending on the class, and are run by a TA, and are there to go over homeworks, give quizzes, give hints for the tests, etc. It all depends on the classes though.

so the discussion sections are more like a study table except we have quizzes?

It depends on the class. Not all classes have quizzes. The discussion is where you can get help in a small group setting as opposed to a huge lecture setting. Many times that is also where classes with quizzes administer the quizzes since it is easier in a small group.

The Principles of Composition (I’m assuming RHET 105) isn’t really that hard. I thought I was going to die in it because I hate writing essays but my TA was awesome so I ended up loving the class. So yeah, you basically just have to write essays and a research paper.

about how many paper and essays did you write in that class? any presentations? and did you just write a paper for the final? thanks

I wrote 2 papers (both around 5 pages, I think). Some other small writing projects. Weekly in class writings for 10 mins. I didn’t have any presentations. My final was the research paper, a “portoflio” in which I had to correct my other 2 papers, and a 3 page essay about what I learned from the class.

I always thought of discussions (although I’m an incoming freshman too) as a small group to discuss the lecture, and it’s usually run by a TA.
