Questions about Clemson

Hey everyone!

I'm looking into possibly going to Clemson, but there are a few questions I had. Hopefully someone who attended the school can help me sort these out.

I'm very interested in going Greek. I know Greek Life is huge at Clemson, but I've heard they don't technically have greek houses and was a little disappointed to learn that. Is this true?

Social Life -- It's a small town, which I like and I know the social scene is big. But is there much to do at night or is it one of those schools where you have to 'go out looking for things to do' or 'get creative'? In other words, how is the night life?

This one is a little dumb I guess, but I love coffee. Does Clemson have coffee shops on campus? I know they have an Einstein Bagels but campus was closed when I visited so I didn't have a chance to venture off and find one.

How are the facilities? Like I said, couldn't get into the buildings. Is the furniture nice and classrooms well kept?

I like big schools. I didn't necessarily want to go to one of those 'everyone knows everyone' kinda places where people have a reputation. Is Clemson the type of place where people all know each other?

Any fun places to go outdoors? Hiking/, trails, etc?

Is the surrounding community boring or is there a lot to do downtown? I know it's not going to be New York.

Is it conservative? I'd like to attend a conservative University and am not interested in liberal ones.

Frankly, I don’t know much about Clemson. However, if you are interested in a conservative university you might also consider Auburn University. Both are in the South, and located in small towns (although my understanding is that the city of Auburn is much larger than the city of Clemson). Auburn is on this Huff.Post list of conservative colleges:
<a href=“The Most Conservative Colleges: Princeton Review List | HuffPost College”>HuffPost - Breaking News, U.S. and World News | HuffPost;

Obviously, Texas A&M also made that list. TAM is well known for having a devoted alumni job network. Stories exist of employers offering jobs just because they saw a TAM class ring on somebody’s hand. Might not be quite true, yet it says something.

Personally, I am an Auburn graduate and never got bored there – never! Yes, they have fraternity houses at Auburn. Sororities are housed on campus in dorms (that counts as conservative, I think). I graduated before coffee was a big deal, so can’t answer that one.

I’ll attempt to answers your questions. Not going to go into a lot of detail since you asked so many but if you want any more info on something specific or want me to expand on something, feel free to let me know!

I’m very interested in going Greek. I know Greek Life is huge at Clemson, but I’ve heard they don’t technically have greek houses and was a little disappointed to learn that. Is this true?

A: Clemson does not have greek houses on campus but fraternities have houses off campus. While people do complain that there isn’t anything on-campus, there is a Greek Quad where you can live with other people in your fraternity (many people do that sophomore year) and I don’t think it’s really been a big problem for anybody having everything off-campus.

Social Life – It’s a small town, which I like and I know the social scene is big. But is there much to do at night or is it one of those schools where you have to ‘go out looking for things to do’ or ‘get creative’? In other words, how is the night life?

A: I think there’s a decent amount of stuff going on for a small town where you don’t have to go out and look for things to do. There’s always parties and once you turn 21 there are a decent number of bars in downtown Clemson. I’ve honestly never felt bored at Clemson other than when I’ve been there during breaks.

This one is a little dumb I guess, but I love coffee. Does Clemson have coffee shops on campus? I know they have an Einstein Bagels but campus was closed when I visited so I didn’t have a chance to venture off and find one.

A: There’s a Starbucks in the Union, Java City in the Library and Einstein Bagels in Hendrix.

How are the facilities? Like I said, couldn’t get into the buildings. Is the furniture nice and classrooms well kept?

A: The buildings are nice - some are a little outdated but overall they are in good condition. They’re working on replacing a bunch of buildings and building new facilities but I think they are well kept.

I like big schools. I didn’t necessarily want to go to one of those ‘everyone knows everyone’ kinda places where people have a reputation. Is Clemson the type of place where people all know each other?

A: There’s no way anybody knows all 19,000 people on campus. That’s how a big school is. Within your major or classes people will know each other but mostly your reputation will just be within your circle of friends. I also decided I wanted to go to a big school for a similar reason but didn’t want to go to a huge school where I would be overwhelmed and where classes would be huge. Clemson, as a medium-sized school, is a perfect compromise.

Any fun places to go outdoors? Hiking/, trails, etc?

A: Clemson’s right on Lake Hartwell and not far from the mountains - tons of hiking spots nearby and if you like water sports the lake is right there.

Is the surrounding community boring or is there a lot to do downtown? I know it’s not going to be New York.

A: Like I said above, there’s a decent number of bars downtown and there’s usually a bunch going on around campus and off-campus. As long as you know it’s not going to be New York, you’ll be fine.

Is it conservative? I’d like to attend a conservative University and am not interested in liberal ones.

A: I don’t know why the Auburn guy is posting in the Clemson forum but Clemson was ranked #13 in Princeton Review’s Most Conservative Students list so yes it is conservative. (Also don’t know how sororities being housed in dorms makes it a conservative school lol - it’s just a state law, at least in SC, that they can’t have houses or else it’s considered a brothel)
